Question

Are non-Sony lenses compatible with Sony DSLRs

On the Best Buy website, it indicated that a Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 VR Zoom lens for Nikon SLR cameras, is an accessory for the Sony Alpha A55 camera. Is this true? If so, please clarify what other Nikon/Nikkor lenses are compatible with the Sony Alpha A55 camera. If a Nikon lens is not digital (originally for a 35mm Nikon camera) can it still be mounted on the Alpha A55 camera body?

I believe you will need to purchase a mount adapter. With this the lens may fit but will only work in manual focus mode.

Thank you for your post.
Nikon has a completely different mounting system than the Alpha line of cameras. With that in mind the lens in question will not fit the Alpha camera natively. You would need to have some type of third part adapter system. It is advisable that you use lens that have been designed to mate natively with the camera as opposed to other lenses.

Question

Can the Sony Alpha A55 camera connect to a flash not mounted on it's hotshoe & can the Alpha Flash be used off the camera?

I'm considering purchasing the Sony Alpha A55 camera and the Alpha Flash was listed as an available accessory. I would like to occasionally mount, whatever flash i get, on a bracket, or light stand. Does the Sony Alpha A55 camera allow for flashes to be mounted off the camera (i.e. on a flash bracket with a cable connection?) Instead of being mounted on a camera's hot shoe mount, can the Alpha flash be connected to a flash bracket or light stand and connect to the Alpha A55 camera or any other camera via a cable and/or wireless device? If this flash is not capable of doing so, what flash can, and what is the approx. retail price of such a flash?
