Questions & Answers for Sony Alpha NEX-5 14.2-Megapixel Digital Camera - Silver

Question

Is the Optical zoom on the lens that comes with the the camera (18-55mm) good enough?

I read that it has a 3X zoom but is that good enough? Other point and shoot digital cameras come with 4 and even 5X zoom...is 3X zoom enough for, say a graduation ceremony where you are not sitting in the first row but you want to get good close up shots of your child sitting down and then receiving his/her diploma? Thanks.

the E-mount 18-55mm SEL1855 is included with the NEX
If you’re the kind of photo enthusiast who likes to carry a camera at all times,
whether actively shooting or not, you probably want one small, lightweight
lens that won’t be a burden while walking around but will deliver top quality
and versatility when a photographic opportunity arises. The SAL1855 is the
smallest and lightest zoom in this series, weighing in at only 210 grams while
offering an 18–55mm focal length range that will cover most day-to-day
subjects. It also features a minimum focusing distance of just 25 centimeters
that, combined with 0.34x maximum magnification, will let you get close
and explore details. If you want to be prepared for a wider range of subjects
the SAL1855 is the perfect companion for the SAL55200-2, the pair providing
excellent optical performance from 18mm to 200mm.

we have included the specs of the lens here to help you,
3 x optical will let you get closer to your subject

Yes if you set the control wheel to M (Manual Exposure): You can adjust the aperture and shutter speed.
there are other variations as well
S (Shutter Priority): Adjusts the shutter speed to express the movement of the subject
A (Aperture Priority): Adjusts the range in focus, or defocuses the background.
P (Program Auto): Automatic shooting that allows you to customize settings, except for the exposure (aperture and shutter speed).

Check the following table for compatible SD cards for use with the NEX-5 camera. Class 10 cards offer the highest speed and are recommended for quick successive shots in high definition:

Question

Creative style question

Hi - I recently purchased this camera. In the store, the associate showed me a mode in which you took a photo in black and white with one color (blue, green etc) highlighted. Now I have the camera at home and can't seem to find it. I looked through the manual to no avail. Is it possible I didn't get a camera with the same package? I am certain it was the camera I purchased that I was shown this feature. Thanks.
