Question

Wireless Printing via a Mac

I thought your question on wireless printing on a PC was helpful but does this router have the same capabilities via the Mac? It currently has Snow Leopard OS and will probably have Lion on it when it comes out in the next few days.

Question

Dual band question

I have recently purchased the N150 router for my parents and it works great so far. The only problem is that they also have a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone system and the N150 is causing interference with cordless handsets. I know that the N600 is dual band and also operates on the 5 Ghz range. With the N600 can the 2.4Ghz frequency be turned off so that it doesn't cause the interference with the cordless phones?

Yes, you have to log in to your router and change the settings there. Be sure that their computers can pick up the 5GHz signal though. Not all of them can!

Yes, under the wireless network settings there is an option to change the network type, in there you can turn the 2.4ghz radio off so only the 5ghz radio will broadcast.

Question

Can it be used as a wireless NAS?

Can I place the router in a location, not connected to a computer or a modem via Ethernet to use the wireless to connect to the two USB ports (e. g. for two external hard drives)? Does Belkin make another product that would allow me to do this?

Thanks,
Tom

Short answer is yes, but refer to documentation regarding compatibility. Have heard of some issues where it will recognize a 1TB HDD, but not a 2TB HDD.

Yes the Belkin N600 will work as you describe, although it only has 1 USB port and does not support USB hub connections. If you need 2 USB ports please look towards the Belkin N750 router.

Belkin does not support the usage of a USB hub with the N600 router. Also the router only supports FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS formatted hard drives.

No, this router will not work with that device. You need a 3G Router, something with the ability to accept the data through USB not ethernet. I believe Cradlepoint makes a router for mobile networks.

Unfortunately the Belkin N600 will only work with a modem that will connect to the router via an ethernet connection. If your modem does not have this then we cannot guarantee compatibility.

The router has more than enough bandwith to support streaming or any sort of data intense connections. The real thing to be concerned with is whether or not you are getting a MINIMUM 10mbps per second from your ISP. If you are getting 10 or anything less, you are not going to be able to stream consistantly in HD, ESPECIALLY through a wireless connection.

Question

Can I use this to get a second wireless network in my house?

I currently have a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem and wireless router in my basement. I have two wireless devices on the first floor that have a weak wireless signal. I would like to increase the speed of their network and their internet connection. I am thinking of buying Belkin Powerline Adapters Video Link 3 to install a Belkin N600 Dual Band Wireless Router in the upstairs of my house. I have several questions.

Will this allow me to set up a second wireless network on the first floor and must it have a different ssid and password or can it have the same ssid as the wireless netowrk in the basement. If it has to have a different ssid, will it have the capability to access the internet and files on the downstairs computer? Finally, will the Video Link3 in the basement give me two more Ethernet ports downstairs and 2 more Ethernet ports upstairs

The Belkin Video link is a networking adapter that will use your home power lines to share a networking signal through out your house without having to run additional ethernet cables. If you have one adapter near your modem you can set your Belkin N600 as an access point to create another or continue a current network throughout your house.

Question

Is there a limitation on the size of the USB attached hard disk?

I have 3TB WD Elements that is not recognized by the router although it's formatted with NTFS on Windows 7.

Found multiple evidence on forums that smaller disks are recognized while the larger are not.

To comment on Belkin support answer:

The problem seems not to be with the partitions, but rather with the router not recognizing GPT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table) and can only work with MBR (which is 2TB limited).

If that's true, then regardless of how you partition, you will not be able to go beyond 2TB which is MBR limitation.

The solutions is rather simple: release new firmware which has the Linux kernel recompiled with GPT support.

Otherwise you must state this limitation upfront and reimburse the customers who spent their money buying this router and useless hard disks.

We have tested the N600 router to work with up to a 2tb hard disk. You may need to partition the 3tb drive into 2 or 3 partitions for it to be recognized correctly.
