Generally you have to open up the unit, install your hard drive inside it, ensuring you have the correct size drive for it, connect the cables from the drive to the unit. If your drive was setup as a boot drive, you might need to reposition your DIPP switches to make it a slave drive if it will no longer be your boot. You'll have to google the drive and find out how to do that if it's necessary.

Question

retrieving data from old disk

Can I install the C drive from a old PC in this enclosure and retrieve the files and programs to a new computer. I have the device and installed drive, connected to new computer and the new computer recognized the drive and said it was not formated. did I want to format it. I do not want to lose the data on this disk, so formatting is not an option until data is recovered.

Question

Will this enclosure work with an EIDE drive?

The product features for this device states that it is compatible with PATA/EIDE drives but the user manual I downloaded makes no mention of EIDE drives. The drive I want to use it with is EIDE. I will be using it with Windows XP.

Parallel ATA (PATA) and Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) are pretty much one in the same. I have this hard drive enclosure and it works with EIDE drives I took out of an XP system :-)

Question

Why doesn't my hard rive spin up when unit is turned on?

I followed all directions when installing my 40GB IDE drive in the external enclosure. When I power the unit on, the 2 lights come on but nothing happens. I don't hear the drive spin up. Do I have a defective unit?
