Questions & Answers for HP - TouchPad Tablet with 16GB Memory - Black

Question

Conflicting answers

A question was asked: Does the micro USB allow it to behave like a USB drive?

“In other words, when you connect the USB cable to the micro-USB port and a computer (PC or Mac), does it work like any other USB flash drive to enable us to drag and drop files?”

Two answers were given:

The HP tech said ‘no’ to this question. Then another answer came that says ‘Yes you can’.

So WHICH is correct? If the answer actually is ‘NO’ then I certainly will NOT be purchasing the PH TouchPad.

Yes, when you connect to a USB port on a computer, a pop up on the TouchPad asks if you want to enter USB mode. Then on the PC, it appears like a drive letter. This is how I copied movies to my new TouchPad. Also, if you disconnect it just by pulling the plug, the TouchPad will give a funny response.

Hi Joanne! The answer to your question is definitely YES. I am very surprised the other tech said no because he or she should have been able to answer this with little problems. The Touchpad comes with a micro USB to USB cable.

What you need to do is simply connect the micro USB section of the usb cable (small end) to the Touchpad, and connect the regular USB section of the cable (large end) to your computer. The Touchpad will then go into USB mode and act like a large external drive so that you can simply drag and drop your files.

You can view Microsoft Word and Excel files thanks to Quickoffice. Other versions and applications of Microsoft Office should be available soon.

The Touchpad is launching with Citrix so there are some possibilities with using full blown office on your Touchpad if you are with a company that also uses Citrix.

However there is no word as far as i've seen if the consumer version of the tablet will ship with Citrix pre-installed. I don't know enough about it to say that the possibility exists.

It will come with MS Office document viewing capabilities out of the box. You can view word docs and excel sheets. Powerpoint viewing will be available via an App Store update for open office. Most likely editing will be available in Q3 of 2011 either via a free App Store update or paid version. Given that the TouchPad has access to the full web and with not only better OS than similar devices, but also better hardware...you can easily create and edit Google Documents or similar in cloud-like services. I recommend going over to PreCentral and checking out the articles and forums for really detailed information.

The TouchPad will be released with a Word and Excel reader; a PowerPoint reader is supposed to be available for download the day of the TouchPad's release. As for editing docs/spreadsheets/PPTs, they are supposed to have an editable version of QuickOffice available at launch but we won't know for sure until someone gets there hands on a RTM'ed model. Here's a link that includes a video with a quick blurb on editing documents in webOS (@ 4min 30secs):
http://worldwidegadget.blogspot.com/2011/06/hp-webos-touchpad-with-quickoffice.html

For you to actually use Microsoft Office on the TouchPad (and not a compatible application like QuickOffice), MS would have to release it for webOS or you would have to use their online equivalent via a browser, Office 365.

Hope this helps,

Applications will be offered largely by way of a monthly magazine called Pivot that will spotlight WebOS apps. Pivot will showcase a broad range of applications — and the developers who create them — by providing customers the freedom to explore based on their interests and lifestyles.

Yes - not nearly on the scale that Apple or Android but HP is trying to improve upon that (about 7000 apps currently I believe). They're working hard to increase the size of their developer community as well as highlight some of the apps that are available. I (personally) see a small app catalog as a good thing though - I don't have to wade through a bunch of useless bodily function "apps" or "me too" apps to find something worth my time.

Hope this helps,

The answer is Yes but with a star *, but within a couple weeks the answer will be a simple YES. Why the star* ? Well, you can currently only create a document in the Touchpad using Google Docs. The Touchpad is bundled with QuickOffice (kinda like Microsoft Office for Mobile Devices) that will eventually allow you to edit and type reports in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, but that functionality should be activated within a couple weeks. Currently QuickOffice will allow you to only view Office documents. Also if you work for a computer that has Citrix remote server installed. You can use the Touchpad Citrix Receiver to connect to your secured company network and create documents, or access other sensitive business information.

At this time, the HP Touchpad does not have full editing functionality with Microsoft Word and Excel. The HP TouchPad ships with a QuickOffice Viewer application for reading Word and Excel files.

However, for maximum productivity, HP is working with Quickoffice to include the Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite, which lets you view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents. It also comes with VPN support to connect to corporate networks and work with documents that are stored on a network.

Out of the gate you have access to a High-performance browser with full access to the web, including support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta for access to rich, Flash-based web content. HP has built its own Mac app, HPplay, that will automatically sync your iTunes library to a TouchPad.

The Touch-To-Share function will only be available on the HP Veer and HP Pre 3...and probably any newer HP phone running WebOS. Of the new features between the TouchPad and the new phones, the only one the Pre 2 will do is connect so you can receive calls on your TouchPad. The messaging alerts for txt/email will not go from Pre 2 to TouchPad. Hope this helped.

You likely have webOS version 2.1 on your pre2. You will likely be seeing an upgrade to version 2.2 soon. 2.2 will support touch-to-share. As far as other features, the touchpad can integrate with a webos phone's text messaging and phone capability. I am pretty sure that works with the pre2 as well, but am not totally sure.

I believe I used the Touchpad more than the average user. The device can get addictive. So far I've been averaging 9 hours of usage and usually I recharge at 10%. Good news though, it charges quickly. If you change the micro USB cord to a thicker gold plated cord you can even get a quicker charge in around 2 hours.

It depends on how you choose to use it, but it's equivalent to the Motorola Xoom and a little less than that of the iPad 2. Most users report approximately 8 hours with average use. The iPad for reference usually gets around 9 hours under similar use.
