In addition to the screen size, battery capacity/accessibility, and camera flash, it is noted on the backside of the box for the 5.0 that Xvid format is supported, whereas there is no such indication given on the 4.0 box. Another significant difference I noticed was that the 5.0 has a WVGA TFT display, while the 4.0 display was called something different (like Super Clear LED or something similar...). The 4.0 display name sounded more high-tech, which, assuming it actually is a more advanced display, I suppose was how they fit in the same number of pixels as the 5.0 into the 4.0 with a smaller screen.

And then, there was the 7" Acer A100 that caught my attention....

Batteries are different.: the '4' uses Lithiom ion and is easily user-replaceable. The '5' uses Lithiom Polymer with a higher capacity.
The back cover of the '4' is easily removed to replace battery or to insert microSD card. The '5' has a dedicated slot for the microSD card, so cover removal isn't needed. Also, '5' has a camera flash.

Mainly size with the Player 5 being bigger and consequently having a larger screen. I believe the Player 5 also has a camera flash which Player 4 does not.

This device has both the Android Market and a Samsung Market to download free applications. There is a front facing and back facing camera. I can't confirm the picture messaging but I believe that is an option. Messages must be sent over Wifi or through a data package from a provider.

you need to pre- cache up to 10 maps of 100 sq miles each. The gps works and pre-cached areas work . Navigation even works as long as you start your route and navigation when hooked up to wi fi.

Yes, it will work exactly as you said. You won't be able to look up nearby points of interest or get directions, but you can still accurately tell where you are on the map.

From the available information, the Galaxy Player 4.0 will in fact offer GPS, however, a WiFi connection must first be made in order for the GPS to download maps to the device itself. Once downloaded, the maps application should work with out the WiFi connection.

Although this unit is an MP3 player first and foremost, there are 3rd party applications on the Android Market that will allow you to make calls or Texts right from the Galaxy Player. Please note a wireless connection will be required for these applications since the Galaxy Player does not offer any cell phone radios or features.

You can't call or TXT on this device through a cell network. But there are a lot of APPS from the various Markets out there that will allow you to do these as long as you are on a WiFi network.

No, im pretty sure its staying on Gingerbread. Honeycomb is exclusively for tablets, no phone has Honeycomb. There is a small possibility of upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich, then again i think this device is or is being discontinued.

yes they can as long as they are downloaded on your computer. I have seen the player supporting mp3 format which is the basic itunes format and WMA files if you have them on windows media player.
Since it is not a apple product you will not be able to sync through itunes but when you go into your music folder ( if your on a windows os) you can drag the mp3 files from itunes into the samsung to put the music on it

Yes, cards 2gb and under are SD while cards larger than 2gb are SDHC. AFAIK every device that takes SDHC also take regular SD cards. I bought a 16gb class 4 card for mine but a class 2 would have probably worked fine too, I'm just not positive for playing video.
