Unfortunately no. The specifications say it does in reality it does not. In all fairness there are no HP laptops in this series other than the Envy series which is double the price that have the backlit keyboard to my knowledge. While disappointed the specs listed tell a different story; I'm keeping this laptop. It is a true value although back lit keyboard would still be nice.

It states in the specifications it does. I ordered this for p/u tomorrow at my local store over one with identical specs with a Bluray player which was actually less expensive. Now both have gone up in price. I prefer a backlit keyboard to a Bluray on a laptop. I liked the dark color on the other DV7 better as well as it's better price but was willing to pay more for a backlit keyboard less a Bluray player. If it doesn't have a backlit keyboard as it states it does I may just return it on the spot and not buy anything. I have been waiting for a reasonably priced 17" i7 with a backlit keyboard. I know I will return if it turns out this is a dual core rather than a quad as stated in an earlier question. Intel states this processor is Quad core and this ad says the keyboard is backlit. Keeping my fingers crossed. Will post what I find out.

No it does not have a backlit keyboard, has an illuminated touchpad. Am on phone now with customer service. They say if not happy return it and BestBuy will try to pricematch a comparable laptop w/ the backlit keyboard

No. I purchased the dv7-6177dx 4 hours ago, in part because the online ad states in two different places (on the link from the sale ads page, and on the specs page) that this laptop has a backlit keyboard. The ad is incorrect. The keyboard is not backlit. There is a strip of light around the touchpad, that is all. It is a good pc, but I am still disappointed, considering a return. False advertising.

Question

Does it have a blu-ray player?

in image 5 on the website, you can clearly see the "blu-ray" symbol on the drive. This conflicts with what the specifications indicate. Can anybody that picked one up in the store verify what kind of drive is built in?

Gaming on the HP - Pavilion Laptop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 17.3" Display - Steel Gray

Before i purchase a computer, i want to know it's full gaming potential, I.E, what to expect; what i can and can't play; if it's worth the investment in replacing my current computer. I want to know what this product is capable of, gaming wise, with the factory setup. (Specifically, World of Warcraft potential with any of the various graphics qualities)

To add to my earlier reply now that I have this bad boy in my possession the computing power for everyday use is very efficient and fast. I am extremely impressed with how cool it runs. Hardly any noticeable heat can be detected even while restIng it on my bare legs. Only once in several hours did I manage to get a significant rise out of it's internal fans. Still yet if I were considering using it for gaming or heavy graphics I'd select an build to suit DV7 model not a prebuilt model but this processor as well as the efficient heat disbursing design of the DV7 seems well up to the task for those who are budget minded gamers looking for an economical platform to upgrade.

This computer has a capable Quad core i7 processor but the graphics appears to be integrated. It has Intel's HD Graphics 3000 mated to a 1600x900 native screen resolution display. This is minimal for for HD standards and the lowest resolution typically seen in this screen size. The DVD drive likewise is minimal. For gaming I'd suggest upgrading the graphics card with at least 1Gb RAM minimum but better 2Gb dedicated on board the graphics card. Upgrade the screen resolution 1900x1080 and add a Bluray drive. Since gaming and graphics are taxing to any system upgrade the RAM to 8Gb. This laptop has 6Gb which should be ample even robust coupled to it's processor for all computing needs short of the demands of graphics of gaming and 3D CAD programs. While considering the processor and RAM on board this laptop likely would handle the graphics it likely would not be seemless and likely be glitchy at times as well as the integrated graphics not provide the best user experience. Another consideration would be heat which slows and overtime is a killer of electronics. A laptop built for gaming would be a better choice considering it is designed to better ventilate the laptops crucial parts.

The 6177dx was actually an error on the Best Buy website. I spent a while with a sales associate checking on this same thing. We determined that they were the same laptop. Also, the "regular price" that was listed was not the actual regular price.

I don't think there ever was a 6177dx. I couldn't find any reference to it on HP's website, the only place I did see it was on the BB website. Maybe it was a way to disquse the true model# until after it went on sale.

Question

how far does the lid open?

Hi. I have heard there are some laptops where the lid/screen only opens so far; some only open to a 90 degree angle. Can you tell me how far back the lid/screen goes? I ask because my son is visually impaired and would be using the laptop on a tabletop slant board and I would like for him to be able to angle it as it best suits him. Thank you.

The laptop has very good screen positioning and I believe would be suitable for your son. I did notice the screen's colors wash out some (this is common with LCD displays) when not viewed directly but it does open well past a 90 degree angle.
