Question

External Desktop or External Portable

Following up on my previous question: Will both External Desktop and External Portable hard drives work with a desktop PC? For use with a desktop PC, does an External Desktop hard drive have advantages/benefits over an External Portable hard drive? For use with a desktop PC, what is the expected reliability and longevity of an External Desktop hard drive versus an External Portable hard drive?

I have both types of drives connected to this PC as I type this answer. They both work great, but the external portable has the advantage of not needing an ac outlet. While it will reduce battery life if used on a laptop without ac available, it's nice to know that your drive will always work as long as your computer will. I've had the external desktop drives for years, I believe the oldest is about 2 years old and the other is about a year and a half old (black Friday of 2011). I've had the portable since Christmas and so far it seems to work fine. I use them for back ups and storing a sizeable music collection. I use them primarily in Linux, but they work equally well in Windows XP-8 as well.

The heading says this model is an External Hard Drive. In the Product Features, its Form Factor is External, but the Package Contents say it is a Portable Hard Drive. A drive that plugs into a USB port can be an external portable, or an external desktop. This is an external portable drive.

An external portable drive is a smaller form factor and is powered from the USB port. The external desktop is generally larger and has a separate power adapter.

The drive is formatted in the NTFS format, so to use it on a Mac, you must reformat the drive to the FAT32 format.

It is formatted NTFS for Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, or Windows® 7. If you choose, you can reformat it for Mac OS® X Tiger®, Leopard®, Snow Leopard™, and Mountain Lion. Of course, reformatting will erase all data and programs on the drive.
