Questions & Answers for Acer - 11.6" Chromebook - 2GB Memory - 320GB Hard Drive - Iron Gray

Question

Will this Acer C7 Chromebook work well for gaming?

Gaming not like running Skyrim at top power but playing minecraft with friends. If not, would adding up the ram to 4gb be worth it or should I not bother?

No. It's not going to run your windows based games. I't a "CHROMEbook" not a laptop. It runs Google Chrome and anything you get to run in a Google Chrome window, like all the Google Apps.

It really depends on the game. If you mean browser games or websites with games, then this will be great. Games that need clients or software downloaded, then you'd need to change the os. It def has plenty storage (320gigs) and a decent processor and amount of ram, but Chrome OS doesnt allow downloading of outside software, only apps from their market. If you change to Linux or some other operating system, it could work great. You can also upgrade the ram from 2 gigs to 4 gigs for better gaming, though this voids the warranty.

This machine does not run a Windows or Apple based operating system and as such Minecraft would not run on it.

Well yes and no, there are games made for chrome that do run and as seeing is this unit is approximately 20% slower than the fastest chromebook out right now (Samsung Series 5, not to be confused with the 250$ Arm version), it should be able to hold it's own. While there are a ton of great games to play in the Chrome Store, Minecraft unfortunately is a java based game so it would not be able to run on this computer while running ChromeOS unless the game gets ported over.

The Alternative would be running Linux on this PC(keep in mind only the cr-48 has been able to run Windows out of all the chromebooks), then you could run minecraft. The graphics card should be fast enough to run minecraft.

To put it simply. No the Chromebook will not. The chromebook which runs the Chrome O/S is used for web based applications and services. The ram is non upgrade able and hard drive space is limited. If your looking to run minecraft I would recommend a standard windows laptop with atleast 4gs of ram. Don't get me wrong the Chromebook is the BEST netbook available for simple web browsing, email, online applications. But it is not going to run any type of Java related games!

Really? Do you even know what Chrome OS is? You cannot upgrade it. This is basically a MACHINE that runs CHROME browser. That is it. This is not a real "computer".

As with another answer - I believe you will be happy with the Google + "Hangouts" application. Once you go thru the steps to set it up it works amazingly well - I may be biased as Skype has always been a problem for me - drops the calls, lag time - for some unknown reason this has not happened with Hangouts. The video seems clearer and I cannot answer why - it maybe my webcam on my Windows OS, but that does not explain the drops calls. Give it a try.

No, you can't install programs on the Chromebook. It only runs web apps. Instead of Skype you can use Google+ Hangouts, you can video chat with up to ten other people for free, and it runs on a faster wireless detection signal, so there's much less lag than Skype.

Question

Whats the battery life?

I have been reading all of the reviews and most of them say the only con is the battery life. I know you can't just tell me a specific answer because everyone uses their computer differently so the battery life varies, but approximately how long does it last? Thanks.

I got just around 3 hours w/o the power cord with continual use. This was rather intensive getting apps in the Google store, and seeing just how much I could do business wise (a lot once your load the correct Google apps). But please remember this little jewel does come w/ an 8ft power cord - so if you do not mind having to be plugged in your hours are limitless.

Word and Excel are Windows software so will not be "created" on the Chromebook. It is an Chrome OS system and you will have to get comfortable with the Google Doc apps found in the Goggle Play Store. If you have had an android smartphone and had the time to use the apps store you may already be nearly ready to use the Google Docs drive that contains their versions of documents, spreadsheets, printing, etc. I find it easy to use, but have had the prior android experience which does give you knowledge and understanding of how this OS works - it is not a huge step to go to the full blown Google apps for business - I love it and find it very easy to use. Give this wonderful system a chance - change is hard for many but once you do you will be pleasantly surprised how advanced the system really, really is - way more than just a "homework" machine! Yes you can view PDF's just as you would in any web based page. Email - any internet mail service - yahoo, google that does not require a Windows operating system will be accessible.

Question

Can the Acer Chromebook be connected to an external monitor?

I'm thinking of buying the Chromebook for my wife, who is used to a larger laptop monitor (and never moves her laptop from where it sits). If she doesn't like the small size of the Chromebook screen, can it be connected to a larger external monitor?

Chromebooks can play formats such as MP4, MOV and Mpeg/Mpg. AVI files are not supported by ChromeOS. ChromeOS is a web-oriented browser, as such, it doesn't work with legacy codecs.

H264 seems to be the best option for playing back video.
