This is an excellent question! I wondered the exact same thing! Now, I have an answer for you. When you enroll online for the program, it will tell you that you will get your first set of HP Instant Ink cartridges in about 10 days. Your Instant Ink program (free months and/or charges) won't start until you actually install one of those new cartridges into your printer though. Once you print something on your new printer (with the cartridges it came with), a message will pop up telling you that your Instant Ink program has now been officially set up. From that point, you'll get a set of cartridges in about 10 days. Just put them up until you need them. Once you install one or both of them, your program officially starts. That's when your free 3 months actually begins and then on the 4th month following that is when you'll be charged the appropriate monthly fee. If you chose a larger plan than you find that you really need, just change the plan before the charges begin. If you didn't choose a large enough plan, also upgrade to avoid any additional charges. :-)

Here is the official HP Instant Ink website: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/ads/instant-ink/overview.html?jumpid=va_hputcs3zy7

And here is a link to the "Contact Us" form that would be most useful to you in order to find an answer to your question:
https://ssl.www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/connect-with-hp.html

I personally feel that HP probably has some way to work with such individuals. I know you can sign up with more than one printer on your plan so maybe there's a way that they can "turn off" the one that's not in use temporarily and "turn on" the other one. I would definitely contact HP directly to find out if they can be of assistance to you and your printing needs.

Internet connection

My printer is connected to the internet by mobile hot spot and or wi fi so it doesn't have a constant connection. Does HP count every page you print every time you use it or will the printer keep track and send the info when I connect. No one I have talked to knows if instant ink will work in my application

The printer will keep track and when you turn the hotspot on, the printer will tell hp where you're ink is at. Hope that made sense.

Yes, each page costs the same. Your monthly fee is based on the number of pages you print, not on the amount of ink you use. You never have to worry again about printing in black and white to avoid using your color ink cartridges.

I'm sure it will. The cost is $9.99 per month or $120 per year which beats the cost of ink when you purchase on your own. It's a great plan once you start.

That link will take you directly to the source, your printer is not listed but it does give a large listing of all printers eligible as well as how the whole thing works. I have a printer set up on the program but have yet to actually see it in action due to low usage on my printer.
