Just the black but you must change the printer properties to greyscale and then on the drop down menu select black ink only. You usually need to do it a few times until the printer "learns it". Good luck

I have an HP Photosmart 5510 that uses 3 color and 1 black. I have had this printer for over a year and the original color cartridges are still in them and they have been empty for a long time. When I print something that has color in it I select black only and the color parts come out grey. I buy 564 black cartridges.

Question

Why aren't the Symbols printed on the Packaging

If the bowtie and pentagon symbols are so important why doesn't HP print the icons on the packaging material so when you buy a package of ink; you aren't surprised to find, the black ink (the only one needing to be replaced at the moment) will not work in that position in the printer.

answer 2
The bow tie symbol is photo black ink and is used in 5 cartridge printers. Black ink cartridge has a house symbol and that ink is used by the printer primarily for letters and numbers not photo's. When you go to buy the ink you will notice the cartridge will either say Photo Black or Black. They are not interchangeable. If you bring up a print report to show what is low you go and get that cartridge.

This HP Printer requires the use of all of ink cartridges in order to print. All of the ink cartridges must be functional and not completely depleted of ink. This HP Printer has the ability to be manually set to where it prints using just the black ink cartridge. Please keep in mind that in order to achieve a true black you will need the use of all of the inks. If you manually set the printer to use just the black ink only the prints will be in grayscale.

Question

Why aren't the Symbols printed on the Packaging

If the bowtie and pentagon symbols are so important (because the bowtie is not usuable in all printers); why doesn't HP print the icons on the packaging material so when you buy a package of ink; you aren't suprised to find, the black ink (the only one needing to be replaced at the moment) will not work in your printer. This has happened to me and I can tell you as a customer; I am very frustrated. This is like false advertising.

I also experienced this problem, I had to make two trips to supplier, the first trip I was sold the wrong product which I was told that it was the correct product, second trip: had to go home & remove used product & return to supplier then I received the correct product. I RECOMMEND THAT THIS BE DONE ANYTIME YOU ARE TRYING TO REPLACE ANY INK CARTRIDGE or retain packaging and take with you to supplier!!!!!

I don't have an answer to this question, but I feel exactly the same why. You're not sure from the packaging if you're buying the black photo cartridge or the just black cartridge. HP should put the symbols on the outside of the package so you know which cartridge you are purchasing

Every HP printer I've ever used has those symbols, they are for proper placement of the correct cartridge in it's correct slot in the printer. The figures are not for determining which ink cartridge to buy. for that you must find your printer model number on the ink packaging, it's usually on one of the sides. Also HP includes a card with the printer that has the cartridge number on it. Hope this helps.

The difference between the two cartridges that you listed in your question is the amount of ink that they cartridges hold. The HP 564XL Original Ink Cartridges are high yield cartridges and contain more ink. They are considered as a cost effective purchase because the cost per page is lower then the standard HP 564 Original Ink Cartridges.
