Hi Dave, To create a 5.1 (7.1, 9.1) studio monitor setup for your home studio, you need a series of five speakers and one subwoofer for the LFE channel---1 Left, 2 Right, 3 Center, 4 Left surround (LS), 5 Right surround (RS). When you're choosing speakers, it's recommended that you go with nearfield studio monitors rather than consumer-grade speakers. While it is technically possible to use traditional speakers, studio monitors offer a couple of advantages. For one, they’re usually active speakers. Standard speakers are typically passive and require external power from an amp to operate, which the Z313 speakers are and explains why you're getting the sound that you're getting. Logitech does have surround sound systems you can add to your PC desk setup---or even your home theater.
