Marvel's Doctor Strange sits really well in this genre. The story was good, the effects were great, as was the acting. I'd actually give it a 4.5 on the ratings scale.
The third chapter in the rebooted sci-fi film franchise finds ape leader Caesar's (Andy Serkis in a voice and motion-capture performance) forces locked in a desperate conflict with the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), a ruthless human whose army also includes a group of traitorous primates. As the war reaches it's apex, the virus that decimated much of humanity begins to cause some of the remaining survivors to slowly devolve into more primitive creatures. War for the Planet of the Apes was OK, it fit in with the other titles from the reboot. It seemed to want to explain the "evolution" of the apes and the de-evolution of humans too neatly. But what the heck, you don't this type of flick for the great story but for the incredible special effects and it delivers on that all the way!
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Alien: Covenant fits in real well with the series and clears up a lot of questions. It's a really good looking movie and the effects are top notch as you would expect.

This is the second outing for the Guardians and it was quite enjoyable. Kurt Russell is as good as ever (good villain); effects were really outstanding... I think this team/franchise will be around for a few more volumes!

Spider-Man Homecoming is a very good re-boot of the franchise. It was set in H.S. rather than college but doesn't really suffer. The humor works far better in this version that the other ones. Michael Keaton just killed it here too - one of the best Marvel villains by far.

La La Land looked pretty, but I wasn't really won over by it... I'm trying to figure out why this got so many awards (other than *ahem* paying for them)... still worth a look though.

John Wick 2, picks up right where the first one left off... so if you liked that one, this one won't disappoint. Great for the martial art/gun-fu/ and even some car-fu tossed in!
With the world overtaken by a horrific plague, Paul (Joel Edgerton) has done his best to make his backwoods home a sealed-off safe haven for wife Sarah (Carmen Ejogo) and teenaged son Travis (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.). When their isolation is broken by the arrival of foraging couple Will (Christopher Abbott) and Kim (Riley Keough) and their little son, they offer the younger family shelter... but the inevitable rise of tension and paranoia in the closed quarters might doom them all, in writer/director Trey Edward Shult's understated chiller. 91 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.

It Comes at Night is a nice little movie with a small cast and a good story... it's a good conversation starter about, "what would you do..." after the "collapse" has taken place.

In a world ravaged by a plague turning mankind into cannibalistic automatons, a British army compound houses researchers looking for an answer... and they're seeking it through rare children like Melanie (Sennia Nanua) who-though infected-retain their capacities for thought and reason. When the base is overrun by Inchhungries,Inch however, Melanie joins the few survivors on a flight to haven in London... which may end prematurely if she can't keep her impulses in check. I thought this was going to be a fairly common "zombie" flick but it had Gemma Arterton so I thought I'd give it the once over. It was well acted and well produce, and had a nice little twist at the end with a philosophic challenge Senna Nunua posed to Glen Close and her resulting actions!
