Dark Souls 3 is mechanically a very successful entry in the series--the movement, animation, rolling, backstabs, parries--all feel fluid and responsive. The small life improvements are welcome--quick menu items as a placeholder for consumables is convenient, holding down the D-pad to bring up your Estus makes inventory management less of a chore. The gameplay is an award winning formula, well executed, competent. But overall the game falls short for some longterm fans. The lore is all over the place. The change to poise rewards aggressive fast play more than careful, measured progress. Sorceries feel weak and unrewarding. NPC questlines are even more arcane to play out than the usual From fair. But the gameplay--the gameplay is so good, most people will choose to overlook these flaws. There's a good game here absolutely. But it could have been better.
