Best Garmin Car Mat

There is not a lot to say about this... It is a great mount for your car. The bottom is very "tacky" and stays in place. It is washable if it gets too dust from a dirty dash. The mat portion is flexible and can conform to a curved dash. This is my second one. You won't regret choosing this.

Can the map be set with North always at top?

Yes, you have a choice in the 2D map view of having North be up. I 3D, your travel direction is up. I find it better to have the travel direction as up. Turns are more intuitive.

Is this Portable Friction mount compatible with Garmin Nuvi 1490

Yes, it will work with all the Garmin Nuvi line. Just unsnap the adapter that came with the Garmin and pop it onto the new mat.
