Best TV Under $1000 in 2016
on January 21, 2017
Posted by: Chance
Verified Purchase:Yes
The Sony X800D is the best TV under 1k for the year 2016. It offers features you will only find on tvs over $1000 from other manufacturers. With it's Wide Color Gamut and HDR it will last for years to come. If you are looking for the most future proof TV you can buy right now, but don't want to break the bank, the Sony X800D is a safe bet.
There is one issue; the brightness. This TV is not suitable for viewing in bright environments. At least not if you want to experience the full effect. The good side is the brightness is the same no matter how long the image is up, producing a steady picture.
If you don't know much about TVs, but still want the best you can get while only wading in the the 4K waters, buy the Sony X800D today!

Great TV But HDR Does Not Work And Is Misleading
on November 6, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
I'm going to start with the one negative right off the bat: This TV does not benefit in any way from HDR Content. It does play HDR signals, and it truly has HDR10 and not some fake feature like LG TVs use. However, this tv had a limited color gamut, which means the picture in no way benefits from an HDR signal.
Also, my remote malfunctioned out of the box. It would not go right on the menu screen. Everything works, and I could select right manually using the button on the TV, but I think something so simple malfunctioning shows the inferiority of the remote, not the TV. The Remote is basic, and you cannot even reach the service menu with it. For some people, that is a big deal. You'll need a Universal Remote if you want to enter the service menu. Samsung did send me a replacement right away however, and it worked as well as it could.
Beyond HDR, this TV is amazing and a great price. This is the best Samsung under $1,000 and it does an amazing job for anything you throw at it. Video Gaming and using it as a PC Monitor is great because of the low input lag. There is no option for the "Soap Opera Effect" because this is a 60Hz TV, but for most applications you will not notice a difference.
If you are looking for a good entry-level 4K TV that can handle every type of use, except HDR, this is a great choice. It's bright and beautiful.
For a little bit more however, you can buy the Sony X800D 43" which is superior in every way except peak brightness. If you are looking for HDR and want to stay at this price level pick the Sony. I have used both and the Sony is superior. It is only 43" though, and the 49" model not only costs more but has an inferior type of panel. If you need something bigger, this Samsung will take care of you.
The only TV that beats this one around this price range is the Sony X800D, and after that is the Samsung KS8000 which knocks both out of the water but costs twice as much. There are no superior TVs in between those price ranges though, and that says something.
So don't buy this expecting HDR. It doesn't have the color gamut to give you a true HDR Picture. It can do everything else though, and is highly recommended as a gaming or computer monitor.

Best Option for entry level VR
on October 4, 2016
Posted by: Chance
Verified Purchase:Yes
The Samsung Gear VR is itself not much. If I was to judge only the hardware used, the new 2016 version is better. It is a great product as a whole however, and definitely the best option for the average person wanting to try out VR technology. It is "powered by Oculus" which really means that the store front apps are the same. The Oculus HMD and this with a Galaxy S7 are completely different. Although there are apps letting you use this for PC Gaming, they all really come short. When it comes to media, this is by far the best option.
While the resolution will be lower than one of the high end HMDs out now, it all depends on your phone, this is much more comfortable which gives it an advantage as a media viewer. The portability of it is also a huge advantage. You can use this practically anywhere with almost no setup. I can go to my car, put these on with some noise cancelling headphones, and it's like I'm in a whole other world.
Gaming wise, the options are limited. While the Oculus store front is pretty much identical to the GearVR one, they do not share games and you cannot purchase on one and use it on the other. Most games will require an external controller. There are blutooth options, but you can also use an OTG USB cable and plug almost anything in and it will work well. The built in touchpad is usefull for navigating the menus, but it frustrating to use in apps and especially games.
If you have a compatible phone and are interested in VR, buy this. At $40 it is a steal. Google Cardboard doesn't compare really. I would tell anyone interested in VR to try this before an Oculus or Vive. I own an HTC, but prefer to watch things on the GearVR because it is so much lighter. The netflix app has an option, if you look straight up, to enter the void theater where you can watch shows while laying your head down.
Also, you can stream content to your phone from a PC allowing you quite an extensive amount of options. It takes a little setup and know how, but MilkVR has until now been the best VR Media Player available. Very simple to use. Also there are apps coming out which make the Gear VR more and more interesting.
Why this and not Google Cardboard? The software. The next Google system may change things, but the Gear VR's appstore has plenty of choices that will make any user happy.
The only downside is also the appstore. Google Play is something I believe willl be around for awhile, and my purchases will still be available to me. The Gear VR storefront, like the one for Oculus, is brand new and still mostly unproven. As a Vive owner I am glad I can use Steam to make my purchases, because Steam like Google Play is something that has already been around more than a decade and I trust it will stay.
If you are not a huge gamer, but are interested in VR, this is the best option on the market still. As long as you have the right phone, and until Google's new system is released and reviewed, this stands hands down as the best overall VR system. The Vive and Oculus are much more niche, and although they cost the same if you factor in the price of a phone, you will need a decent computer to use them. For most, this is not only the best option fiscally but overall the better experience.

Good for PC; Bad for Console Gamers
on October 4, 2016

This is a good deal if you meet these three criteria. 1) You use headphones for PC and not for a console [You will not be able to use virtual surround with a console] 2) You are looking to use Virtual Surround Sound and 3) You have high impedance headphones which require amplification beyond what a typical motherboard delivers.
It is a very good product. Currently I have a Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7 Motherboard which has Creative quad-core sound and SBX Pro Studio. So I can attest to it being the same quality as the internal sound card. I believe the E5 is slightly newer, it runs on different software. It is really only meant for use with headphones, though there is a line out for stereo. Switching between a surround sound setup and headphones is the only real difference I have found between these and the built in quad-core.
It is a DAC and headphone amplifier, and at $75 isn't the best option if those were the only uses you have for it. The Virtual Surround is the only reason I would recommend this over a tube based Amp. It is some of the best Virtual Surround I have ever heard, and as a VR user Virtual Sound is really important for me. I find 7.1 headphones very gimmicky. Virtual Surround is really the only way to get a good surround experience with headphones.
I also am running high impedance headphones, which is another thing I can attest it works well with. I have Sennheiser HD600's, and typical amplification isn't an option. Again, if you are just looking to drive high end headphones for music, I would look elsewhere. If you want to use them for gaming, and believe me they work well for that, thi is a good option. It has a mic in port as well, so you can buy an attachable boom mic to use for communication and not have to plug it in at a different location.
I don't know why the price has been lowered so drastically as this is hardly a year old, and it may be Creative is going to release another product to replace it. It is a niche product in my opinion, and although it does work on the PS4 you will not get the virtual surround on consoles. So if you are a PC gamer looking for better sound to go with your high end headphones, and especially if you are using a laptop and do not have the option of an internal card, this is a slick deal.
If you mostly listen to music, or you do not play games on PC. If you are a console gamer. If your headphones cost less than this product. You will not benefit much from this purchase. If you need a headphones amp for music, look into tube amps.

I was looking for a simple way to store discs laying around and came across these at Best Buy. CD sleeves do not offer much protection, so if that's what you need go somewhere else. But if you just want a way to store random discs in a way that doesn't take a lot of space, these sleeves are perfect for the job.
Also I like the colors they came in. I needed these to store console games, and blue for PS4 and green for Xbox just worked out wonderfully.
You can store a disc on each side, so every sleeve holds 2. After a few dozen, you begin to realize how much space this saves compared to a full case.
If you want to organize discs, but don't need that protected from more than small scratches and dust, these work well!

Always a great gift!

I am a PC gamer, and as a PC gamer Steam is simply part of my lifestyle now. Most PC games today require it, and it has eliminated the need for discs. That is why physical copies of PC games have nothing but a product number inside.
For those who feel a disc has more longevity, history has begun to show that Steam will be around longer than most discs. Games i purchased over a decade ago are still available for me to download at any time and any number of times. Valve has truly cornered the market, and I don't mind.
Some games, EA games, require Origin. Most games go through Steam however. So, if you are looking for a gift for a PC Gamer, a steam gift card is always a good idea. A lot of gift cards are never used, but Steam cards always are.

Solid Controller that is just a little too pricey.

I recently upgraded from the wired version, because of a fault with it's cable. It began to stop working when the cable was move to a certain angle. When I went to exchange they did not have any on the item floor (The employee made me go look and find it). I instead opted to bit my tongue and upgrade to the version with wireless receiver.
I'm no stranger to controllers, having use every important one from Atari, to SNES, to the Dreamcast controller the Xbox controller borrowed most of it's design from. The Sony Dual Shock, Valve's Steam Controller, to my Vive Motion Controllers and soon my Leap Motion hand controllers. My opinion in this review will not reflect my single incident with a bad wire.
It is hard to tell the difference between the Xbox One and the Xbox 360, and even more so on PC. The most striking difference between the two is the price. A wireless Xbox 360 Controller, with a rechargeable pack, can be found for less than a tethered Xbox One controller. I have tried to find a difference in them, the One and the 360 versions, and I have not found a single thing.
The 360 was a decent controller, and could take a few hits which is good for a console controller for little kids. If you are reading this review, I am going to assume you are older than the average console gamer. The Xbox One controller using the PC receiver has no lag or problems of any sort (much like the 360). It seems sturdy, certainly less delicate than the Steam Controller, but not close to the features and customization the Steam Controller gives you.
To be blunt, I have used the official Xbox controller on the PC simply because most PC games have native support for them. Other 3rd party controllers can run into many issues, and be inferior in quality. I had two Razer 360 Controllers which were just torn to pieces and useless after a year of normal use. They rubber from the thumb grips would rip. I am using a Razer keyboard and Mouse but I will never use a controller from them again.
So the Xbox controller is a great choice for PC gaming. With Windows 10 already having the drivers for it, setting up a controller for PC gaming has never been easier. Any age group can handle it. It seems well made and performs perfectly well. The analog sticks on this controller will NOT rip off.
That leads me to my final point. I cannot give the Xbox One controller with PC receiver anything more than a 3 because I simply don't think it is a big enough improvement over the 350 to warrant the current price gap. If it was just $15 I might change my mind, because it does feel better made, and I think that is what makes it cost more; The higher quality hardware.
For the average PC gamer I recommend looking into a wireless Xbox 360 controller for PC gaming. It will serve you just as well. For those of you whom the difference in price is manageable, definitely go for the Xbox One. It has a higher quality to it, and PC games will continue to support it for the foreseeable future. Even if the controllers are no different than the 360. For the small percentage who want to try something new, complicated, but rewarding. Well I say get a Steam Controller. They are cheaper and more fragile, but infinitely more customization and useful in situations the standard controllers of today which all follow the same control scheme are not.
For these reasons, I rate the Xbox One Controller with Wireless PC Receiver 3/5. I have no doubt it will become the standard for PC gaming in the future, but for right now save yourself some money by getting the 360 and put it towards a nice headset or something else.

How much of a visual difference is this one from the oculus rift?

Depends on the phone you are using, and the content you are viewing. The Oculus and the Vive are both the same resolution, which is higher than any phone will give you right now. They also have the option for super sampling, which takes high end hardware but gives you the best VR experience available right now. Now, the answer to your question really depends on what you are using it for. Honestly a lot of the games out right now won't look much better than a cell phone game. Media won't be that much higher quality either. Factoring in the price difference, honestly the difference is very little until you start using AAA Games. If you are just looking for something to view VR media, buy this. If you are just interested in VR and do not have an already beefy computer (and I mean top of the line) buy this. Even if you are interested in the Oculus, buy this first if you have the phone already. This is the best entry point and the best experience available right now.

Will this work with windows 10?

Yes it uses Creative's most recent software suite which is available only to the PC and not consoles. It was released well after Windows 10 so the answer is undoubtedly yes, and I have used it on Windows 10 so I guarantee it does work.
