Natural Born Killers was criticized for its violence when released in theaters, and this director's cut release restores even more graphic content. Only huge fans of the film are likely to be interested in these additional scenes, but for those interested in learning how Oliver Stone ticks, it's a great study of the mind of the director. Also included are several surreal deleted scenes, including two featuring Ashley Judd and Denis Leary, as well as an alternate ending. Stone's commentary, which is prefaced with a Trimark Pictures disclaimer as not reflecting the company's views, proves he really does have a grasp of the medium, and the "making of" featurette with the cast and crew reinforces the idea that this film was made in an "inmates running the asylum" manner. For those interested in the controversy or looking for an education in violent experimental filmmaking, this disc is loaded with goodies.

This was remembered only for Woody Harrellson's non-Cheers performance. I will have to re-view it soon. Was this a precursor to Pulp Fiction by the all-time violent expert of the cinema?

What's great about it: Woody's acting
What's not so great: Story line was bizarre. Or was it ahead of its time?
Warner Home Video has competently transferred Clint Eastwood's crime drama to DVD, and also embellished the disc with some interesting special features. Although it is a movie lacking the flair of many of Eastwood's directorial efforts, it is still impressive here in its original widescreen aspect ratio, which is enhanced for 16 x 9 television sets. The totally clean picture is complemented by an excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, which makes the most of the substantial use of music in the film. There are two documentaries on the disc. "The Scene of the Crime" is an above-average behind-the-scenes featurette that includes cast and crew interviews and offers some interesting insight into Eastwood's directing methods. More fascinating still is the second documentary, "True Crime: True Stories," which recounts the experiences of a real-life journalist in his attempts to save a wrongly convicted criminal from execution. The other two extra features on this disc are the original theatrical trailer for True Crime and the promotional video for the Diana Krall song "Why Should I Care?" Warner might have been tempted to put together a relatively minimal DVD package for this deliberately paced thriller, but thankfully this disc has a lot to offer.

I remembered really liking this in the 70's, but was badly disappointed this time. The Nadsat language wasn't as interesting. The ending may have taken away its shine.

Clint Eastwood made another great movie. I identified with the picked-on kids in the neighborhood. Clint was an angry old man, but showed some real great qualities as he got to know them.
