Space…the final frontier…one that can be turned to endlessly to create pulpy science fiction drama in the form of Paramount’s perennial Star Trek franchise. The latest to hit theatres, Beyond, offers some tweaks to the formula that JJ Abrams established with the successful and entertaining 2009 reboot & Into Darkness.
First off, the focus has turned more toward character dynamics and exploration of unknown worlds. These are welcome changes as it draws a greater feeling of classic Star Trek films versus the more action-heavy recent installments. Justin Lin, who reignited the Fast & Furious franchise, also takes the helm as director with Simon Pegg taking on screenwriting duties. Those moves shine through with an experience that’s overall more fun and direct with less time given to the tenuous Alternate Universe connections that made the first 2 in this new take on the franchise confusing. The theme of the movie – strength in unity – is a nice one to take in during what is shaping up to be a bitterly contested political election year.
I only had a couple of issues with the movie. Idris Elba plays the main villain and does a nice job with the role. However the intricate make-up job, while impressive, is sort of ridiculous and his broken pattern of speech coupled with his ultra-deep intonations make him occasionally difficult to understand. Some of the humor – especially with Karl Urban’s character Bones – feels forced. The opening scene featuring some poorly rendered goofy pint-sized CG aliens was weak.
Overall though, I think this is probably the best of the new Star Trek films. Recommended.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ brings together all you'd want from a great Western – a talented ensemble cast, well-choreographed action sequences, beautiful desert vistas, and of course a rousing musical score featuring the theme from the acclaimed 1960 version. It’ll make you reach for the skies like it’s high noon…with happiness! Well, maybe that's a bit much, but I think you'll enjoy yourself.
The cast shines brightest of all the elements the film brings to the table - especially when it comes to its two stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt. Washington brings the intensity and poise you expect of hardened bounty hunter Sam Chisolm while Pratt delivers the laughs as he transitions from space cowboy in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ to actual cowboy without losing a beat. It seems that director Antoine Fuqua is perhaps tapping into some of that Marvel superhero magic with his approach to characterization as each of the Seven is distinguished with a particular fighting skill (master with knives, bows, explosives specialist, etc).
The story is serviceable as the Seven attempt to take back a small mining town from the clutches of an evil band of thieves lead by Bart Bogue (a nice turn from actor Peter Sarsgaard). While never dull, much of the movie is setting the pieces in place for the final 40 minute confrontation pitting the Seven and the townsfolk against Bogue’s army of hired guns. Fuqua certainly knows how to stirrup compelling action sequences as he displayed in past works like ‘Training Day!’
While perhaps not a classic for the ages, this is spectacular entertainment that’s certainly worth saddling up for and heading down to the theatre. Giddy up!

The Final Destination series is about as goofy as it gets, but getting all 5 for the price of a trip to Chipotle doesn't get much better! Fun to pull out a couple of these around Halloween and give them a spin.

Krampus gets off to an awesome start with a sharp wit and a set-up that recalls other holiday classics like National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. When it turns toward being a horror movie though, Krampus isn't used enough and the various CGI minions get too much screentime. A passable movie you may spin once every few years near Christmas time, but not quite a holiday mainstay.

Justin Vernon and his band Bon Iver (plus Volcano Choir and Shouting Matches for that matter) are tremendous. But unfortunately this album didn't work for me. Some of the songs are terrific, but the production falls short in that it's too minimalist and processed. Clocking in at just over half an hour, the album also feels a little too lightweight for something that's been on the burner for over 5 years. Not bad by any means, but I hoped for more.
