The water basin needs to be wiped out and kept dry between uses. The plastic must not be treated at all to prevent mold growth.
The light is so bright, that it has to be turned away from the bed and covered. It is not very useful as an alarm, unless you enjoy a bright nightlight blinding you as you sleep, from the time display.
It does diffuse the oils adequately though.
