An Excellent presentation of an 80's Classic

Capturing the nostalgia of adolescence, Stand By Me is based on a Novella by Stephen King that is entirely devoid of horror elements. It's presentation of this blu ray is immaculate, with vibrant colors that appear to have been unmanipulated and excellent clarity. It also marks some early big screen performances from the likes of Keifer Sutherland and River Phoenix. Excellent special features round out this complaint free release of a classic film.

Still has room to Improve...

The Fugitive is an engaging action thriller released in the early 90's that capitalized on the star power of Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. While it isn't exactly the kind of film that will long be remembered as a bona fide classic from that time like Pulp Fiction or Forrest Gump, it's certainly engaging enough to have stood the test of time these past 20 or so years. This fast paced film with it's stunning set pieces (including a massive train wreck) seem like a great fit for high def, and they would be, if it weren't for an A/V presentation that doesn't exactly impress. The image is soft and at times grainy. The sound doesn't offer the same punch as other films from the time presented with lossless audio. That said it's still an upgrade from the DVD and can be had for a really low price.

Almost the Definitive Version...

While I would argue that almost any movie from any period of time benefits from high resolution, no one is going to argue that certain film genres excel with greater visual fidelity and auditory punch. War movies are certainly among those. Riddley Scott's Black Hawk Down is a fantastic contemporary war film that touches on an oft forgotten military engagement--The Battle of Mogadishu. Possibly the second best war film to be released in the past 15 years (I would say Letters from Iwo Jima is the best...) Black Hawk Down is a must see for action fans. If you already own the 3 disc DVD you may not want to get rid of it though, since not all of the special features make it onto this Blu Ray.

What's great about it: HD Video and Lossless Audio, A Riddley Scott Film that doens't need a director's cut to be great
What's not so great: Missing many of the special features of the 3 disc DVD set.

what is the best program for stop motion or animation?

Stop motion animation is the process of taking still shots of physical models or rigs and moving them slightly between photos to produce animations that are similar to a flip book. That said, is is less about software and more about having the materials to create props, scenery and heaps of patience because it's a slow process. Any editing software package should allow you to import still photos and string them together to create animations however.

If you are interested in computer generated animation than I would recommend trying Blender for 3d animation since it's free and quite powerful. If you are able to grasp Blender and want to move on to something more professional than I would suggest Autodesk Maya or Cinema 4d. Along with those programs Photoshop (creating and editing textures. GIMP can also be used and is entirely free), Adobe After Effects (useful for post production effects) and some sort of editing software will be necessary to make complete films. For 2d animation I would recommend trying to learn Adobe Flash.
