I'm using this dvd player with a dvd projector, and need to connect it to an external speaker. I tried to use a boom box, but it didn't work. Any suggestions for what kind of speaker will work with this dvd player?
You cannot connect speakers directly to this BD/DVD player.
You will need a stereo receiver that has an audio coax input as this BD player has only a coax digital audio output.
The speakers will be connected to your stereo receiver.

Does this player play CDs that are sound only? Since I am interested in sound only, is this the best player? Is there a version that can handle 3-6 discs rather than just one?
Yes. It can play music CDs only. That is how I listen to my huge collection of old music CDs.
Based on my experience with multiple discs player, I would not recommend it. I had one but it did not last long. Somehow it would skip songs after playing for about an hour. I would end up stopping it and turning it off. Maybe it is the player.
With a single CD player, I could listen for hours without any issues
