I would always recommend an SSD if you are going to purchase a hard drive. However, if you do not want to pay the extra $30-50 for one, this is a great alternative. I have been using WD drives for a while and they have only failed for me after 4-5 years of use, which is normal.

No, it has a proprietary connector that only works with the Surface Pro 3.
