The WD My Passport Slim external hard drive was purchased for my daughter to back up her laptop data while in college. The decision to buy this drive was based upon reliable performance over years of service from the same device used at home. The metal case permits greater heat dissipation than a plastic case, which enhances the life span of the 1 TB hard drive. The USB 3 interface reduces transfer times for large amounts of data, as can occur in back up operations. One terabyte is small compared to newer capacity hard drives but Is sufficient for data, unless a large number of pictures and videos are involved. I use a NAS for our home network, but the size is not practical for a college dorm room. Pros: metal case, USB 3, compact size Cons: lack of drive redundancy
