It does not track steps taken if arms are not moving (arm with the tracker on it has to move)...I've found that to be the only problem. I do a lot of grass cutting - since my hands are on the handle of the lawnmower, it does not track all the steps I take while mowing. Find this with shopping, too - pushing the cart so doesn't track steps. SO - I have started putting it in my pocket...that seems to help. May not be as accurate but at least it tracks.
