I've been a fan of the Transformer movies and have enjoyed them, but like many have seen a sharp decline in the overall quality of the films as they progressed. It's become more about the eye-candy experience than the story and/or characters, becoming for the most part, a forgettable popcorn summer-fest movie you quickly forget about after the lights come up.
For me the 1st is still the best. I had this on Blu-ray (the 2-disc collector edition). The Blu-ray has always been a demo-worthy disc for showing off your system, but the 4K version is a real step up and I feel worth the price of admission.
According to what I've read, this has been up-sourced from a 2K master, but even so, having seen the Blu-ray version multiple times, I'm enjoying it as though seeing for the first time.
There's a nice uptick in detail level and sharpness. I'm noticing details (like the alien inscribed text on the metal disc of Optimus Prime's face as he transforms) that weren't clear before. The complexity of the changes on each of the characters and depth in-between materials can really be appreciated in 4K, over what was already an exceptional Blu-ray.
Skin tones and faces show great definition, and you can see the difference throughout the film in the overall environmental details.
This is a very kinetic, face-moving firm, with camera angles almost changing at a blitzkrieg pace, which on most films tend to loose the details or becomes hard for your eyes to track. Not the case here, as it's all there for you to take in. Fabrics show woven stitching, bits of debris fill the air in the desert attack or as Megatron and Optimus crash through buildings.
There's a level of film grain and sun flare effect inherent in the photographic shooting style of this film, which transfers nicely on this format, but is never overpowering.
The 4K version is the way to go with this film, offering superior video over the Blu-ray and sound that's all over the room
In this case, spend the money to re-invest in this title and be prepared to see more than meets the eye!

Starship Troopers is one of those films that is so over the top, badly acted, filled with strong social commentary, has 'cult-film' written all over it, and so blood-squirting (not sure it this beats Kill Bill), that it's insanely fun to watch and get lost in. I can't seem to pass it up when I come across it on cable TV.
I only owned the DVD version, so it's a huge upgrade in video quality over that, and (from what I've read) a jump up from the blu ray. It's got grain (hey, when you're killing bugs, things get messy), so don't expect this to look like a newer digitally filmed movie. But there's a lot to be seen with the extra detail and sharpness in PQ. There are varying colors and shading on the bugs I've never noticed before. This is well worth the cost of admission.

Serenity continues the magic of the original Firefly series, helping to bring some closure to a great series that ended way too soon. Joss Whedon had a very special show, taking an everyday man and his eclectric crew, just trying to make a living on the frontier of space, while the corporate elite try to consume and control everything. No social commentary here.
Presented in 4K, Serenity has never looked better. This is an upscale from a 2K master according to sources, which had me originally wonder if it would be worth re-buying. At it's current price (around $18) it is. A definite must for fans of the original series.
There's a nice increase in detail and clarity while maintaining some grain and the look of film. The lettering and detail on the Serenity pops, textures on clothes are clearer, along with facial details. Colors look stronger too. I tried the included 1080p blu ray afterwards (which always looked strong), to compare, and it looks lighter and more washed out. A few of the special effects suffer slightly from the increase in resolution (the scene where the Serenity lands in an open field or the Rever ship chasing it looks more fake), and in one or two scenes faces looked a little shinier than normal, but that might be me nitpicking.
This is a great buy at this price, and Serenity won't look any better unless they ever do a full 4K or higher scan from the original 35mm prints. Watching this again made me want more Firefly and wonder why this amazing series had such a short run.

Blade Runner is one of my favorite films and it's influence on movies is profound. I think I've owned every version at one point or another (from the Criterion laserdisc, to dvd, to multiple versions on blu-ray, maybe even a VHS copy at one point). The pervious Final Cut blu-ray was very impressive and a jump in quality, plus great extras over the older Blu-ray versions. I've been hesitant in re-buying movies(even my favorites) in the 4K format unless there's a significant improvement in picture quality, and worth the re-puchase price. Having read really good reviews online, I can say without any hesitation, buying this is worth the price.
For around $20, this 4K version has an impressive uptick in sharpness, detail level, and color. It is like watching this movie again for the first time. I'm noticing details, especially in the open street scenes, I've never seen before. Colors appear more intense - and my TV doesn't have the benefit of HDR (got mine from BB just as HDR was coming out and could afford the extra $500 at the time), which is another reason I hesitate on many of the 4K re-purchases. So if yours does, you're in for a real treat.
This isn't going to look like Guardians 2 or The Revenant, but if the studios took this much care on their older movie titles, I'd find myself re-buying a lot more movies.
Don't think about it, grab Blade Runner in 4K and enjoy a really great movie, that looks the best it ever has!
