A very unique take on a post-apocalyptic (or post-post-apocalyptic?) setting. The robot animals and the unique weaponry make the game, with the player having to learn and exploit the weaknesses of every enemy with the right weapon and strategy. Also the story is really good too, with Aloy being a very likeable character. One of the best open world games to come around in a while.

Going into it, I thought Far Cry 5 would be a marginal improvement over 4 in the same way Far Cry 4 was a marginal improvement over 5. I'm glad to have been so wrong. Far Cry 5 easily blows 3 and 4 out of the water and sets a new gold standard for the franchise as a whole. You can tell that Ubisoft put a lot of thought into focusing on the previous games' strengths and mitigating its weaknesses.
Instead of just focusing on one charismatic antagonist that you only see a couple of times throughout the game, this game gives you four that you can take down in any order, all of them constantly antagonizing you throughout the game instead of only rarely showing up. Instead of climbing towers over and over again, you learn about the world by exploring, talking to NPCs, reading notes and listening to answering machines. Instead of forgettable music, there are actually some nice licensed tracks on the radio. The vehicles have much more variety to them as well.
In addition you now have NPC companions that you can take with you, each with their own skills to make things easier for you. It's a page ripped straight fro Metal Gear Solid 5, but I think Far Cry 5 actually does it better.
All this without even mentioning the Arcade mode, which gives you a virtually endless amount of content to play through after you finish the campaign.
I think people who had written off Far Cry after 3 and 4 should give 5 a chance. People who already liked 3 and 4 have no reason to hold off. This is definitely one of the best games of 2018.

Need for Speed Payback is a fun open world racer and you could do much worse than playing it, but its attempts at goading the player into using micro-transactions, uneven difficulty and attempts to crib open world design elements from Forza Horizon keep the game from being truly great.
You play as three protagonists, Tyler, Mac and Jess as they race Fortune Valley a Las Vegas stand-in as they complete various racing, drifting, dirt, drag and getaway events to take down 'The House' a cartel that has been fixing street races and screwed over Tyler. Blah blah, the story is knock-off Fast & Furious schlocky tripe, but nobody plays racing games for the plot anyway.
The game can look very good at times and the open world is fun to drive around in, mostly because of the open world activities you can do in it. Smashing billboards, breaking speed records, drifting, finding derelict cars and challenging roaming racers are all fun to do, and I know that because I had fun doing them in Forza Horizon. Still, for people who don't have access to an XBox One or a decent PC, this game can be a good replacement for Forza in its best moments.
It's just too bad that the highs are counterbalanced by a vehicle upgrade system that, maybe true to the game's Las Vegas aesthetic feels less like upgrading a car and more like pulling a lever on a slot machine. To the game's credit, since it has been released the game has made its upgrade system kinder and gentler, putting less pressure on the player to give in and purchase micro-transactions. However simply having to engage with a randomized upgrade system that was designed to frustrate you into paying more left a bad taste in my mouth, regardless of them walking it back.
Also, this game has some of the more ridiculously blatant rubber banding I've seen in a racing game in a long time. You will absolutely feel it when you eat wall and get sent to the back of the pack and the cars ahead of you slow down to give you a chance, just as you will when you're ahead and the cars always manage to stay close enough to pass you if you make one single mistake, no matter how high you've leveled your car. This ties back into the micro-transactions; the game seems to purposefully try to frustrate you so you will go to the store and pull the level on the slot machine and hope you get something useful. Forget about being the same level as an event being enough to beat it; I found that you need to be at least 15 to 20 levels higher before your chances of winning went from being a coin toss to likely.
All in all, it's an okay game, but people with access to Forza Horizon 3 should just get that instead.

If you've already played and are familiar with the Uncharted games, whether you should buy this one or not are solved with a simple question: do you want to play more Uncharted?
It's a 10hour-ish action adventure 3rd person shooter with an Indiana Jones style story starring returning characters Chloe and Nadine as they explore India, discover an ancient civilization and maybe stop a terrorist plot. The level design is mostly linear shooting with parkour platforming, puzzles and action set pieces sprinkled throughout, although the game does open up part way through for a semi-open world section. The multiplayer mode from Uncharted 4 is included too, which is nice.
It's a fun game in and of itself. Not as good as Uncharted 2-4 but still a good time.

Bought two of these for PlayStation and my PC. The first cable gave out within a couple months; the prongs gripping it to the Dual Shock don't last very long at all and now I can't use it while gaming without the cable slipping out of the controller. The second cable I never pull from my other controller because I learned my lesson the first time.
I'll probably never get a USB cable again and just get a charge station. They are not built to last.
