I would call this a mystery dressed as a western.
The story has all the classic Tarantino components, so I don't know if I would call it fresh... But I did enjoy the film enough to purchase (I rented it first). The acting is well, the inclusion of http://www.enniomorricone.org/ as the composer was very enjoyable. And the story kept me guessing till the end.
