The guide is useful but not super user friendly. It takes a lot of time to figure out where and what you are missing and then to find it in the book, I wouldn't say the guide is essential to have but I did refer to it while playing the game,

Relive all of the adventure from the movie with a fun Lego twist while playing Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens deluxe edition for PS4. Join Rey and Finn as they embark on an epic battle against Kylo Ren and the First Order, and create whole new scenes or reinvent old ones with Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

This is probably one of my favorite Lego video games. So well done and the action is pretty steady. It's got amazing graphics for a Lego game and is a lot of fun to play.
