Have patience. Buy an NVR as well and all is good.

I have three pan and tilt cameras and they work great. I had to get the dlink NVR in order to record. The installation requires patience and may take more than one attempt. If there is a power disruption of some sort the recording or camera may stop. Simply unplug the camera and plug it back in and all is good. 4 stars for the little glitches. But overall I am very satisfied.

what do I need to purchase to do the following?
Can we monitor my elderly mother a mile away? I have a mac and an iPad and there is no computer in her house.
You will need her to have at least Internet access with a modem/router. The camera connects wired or wirelessly. On your end, you just need Internet access. Please note. This is for real time viewing only and the cameras need reset from time to time. To record you will need additional hardware.

Can I view the camera from anywhere?
Can I view activity on my phones app from anywhere (say, from another state) or do I have to stay within the Wi-Fi's range?
Yes. You can view from anywhere as long as you have some type of Internet access. WiFi is recommended just because of the large amount of data it takes to transmit video. If you don't have an unlimited data plan you may go over depending on what plan you do have.

Charge for video recording?
Is there a charge or a service contract needed to actually tape the video for future viewing?
For the dlink cameras there is no additional charge because they don't record. You will need an NVR and a portable hard drive a few dlink cameras and you will be all set with your own home network camera surveillance system. You will need Internet with WiFi of course.
