Is the band easy to put on and take off. My last one with the buckle was difficult to remove
Yes it is. The alta is similar to the flex with clasp instead of watch like band.

Does it use the same charger as the Charge?
No all Fitbit models have different charger for each device

I am getting the notification that I have a message. It scrolls "New message" not the actual message and doesn't tell me who it's from. ???
You have to sync the alta to your phone and then set the notification from your contacts to the device.

Does it read heart rate or is it compatible with a heart rate monitor?
no heart rate monitor on this model. I can recommend you the Charge HR, the surge and the new blaze.
