I had a previous network adapter to give Internet to some things that don't have wifi. This works way better and things with wifi can link to it for a better connection. If you have a dead corner, get this to extend your coverage and get a switch to give Internet to anything without wifi since it has an Ethernet plug in.

after installation , if house looses power , when power returns , does the extender need to be set-up again or does it seamlessly return to its previous setup ?
I unplugged mine for a while and when I plugged it back in it remembered everything

Will this work for a desktop that is not wireless?
I received a desktop from my employer for my home officer. It is not wireless. It does not have a CD ROM drive. I need to gain connectivity using the Ethernet cables. My home office is upstairs but my Verizon DSL modem is downstairs. Will the NETGEAR Wall Plug work for me since I can plug the Ethernet cable directly into it? Thank you.
Yes it will if you have a wireless router connected to your modem. You would use the extender function on this product.
