do you have to replace operating system when you replaced a failed hard drive
Yes. Hope you have the original installation disks or a complete image backup. But cheer up, by the time you're done you have the latest versions of all your software with all the patches!

External SSD Hard Drive

I just finished a search of BestBuy and could not find any external SSD hard drives for a desktop PC (portable not necessary). Lots of external hard drives shown, but none show as SSD. Suggestions please?
Sure - buy an external enclosure and an SSD. Pop the drive into the enclosure, hook it up via the USB connection, and then partition/format the drive any way you need. At the moment, a 1TB SSD is the largest I know of that's commercially available, but I'm sure larger drives are coming soon.

which hard drive is best for a mac lap top?

I'm guessing from your question you want to replace an existing hard drive on your MAC. I would highly recommend using a solid state drive - they're faster and much better performing. There are a number of SSDs on the market so it's become a matter of preference. I just installed a 1TB SSD and it's awesome. Check the support web sites for the manufacturer you like, buy the drive and then follow their install instructions to the letter.
