Be Our Guest For Another Tale As Old As Time

Coming off the heels of the smash hit live-action remakes of the Jungle Book and Pete's Dragon, it came as no surprise that Disney was going to remake Beauty and the Beast, the very first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. So, how does this new interpretation of a classic hold up? Needless to say, this movie is definitely a very strong remake indeed, but whether or not it holds up to the original can be up to debate.
Much like the first film, it focuses on the story of a young girl named Belle, who recently moved to a small village with her father, and feels out of place amongst the villagers who disown her intellect and reading skills. However, when her father is kidnapped by a former prince cursed into a hideous beast, she agrees to take his place and become his prisoner. Though relations are tense at first, the two ultimately form a friendship that perhaps could become something more.
For the most part, the basic plot structure is the same, save for a few minor details. In this version, Belle is just as crafty an inventor as her father, the Beast is more well read, and Gaston is a war veteran yearning for the glory days. An even bigger difference shown is many burning questions left by the original, such as the reason behind the Beast being forgotten, and the absence of some relations.
Amongst these changes though comes a few character changes that some might be put off with. Belle is less passionate in her movements and speech than her animated counterpart, Beast's design seems less Beastly than before, and Gaston isn't quite as snobbish and rude. The castle staff remains the same; Lumiere is the charming ladies man, Cogsworth is the old worrywalter, Mrs. Potts is the kind, motherly one, and Chip is still the innocent child. A welcome addition to the cast is Stanley Tucci as Maestro Candenza, an original character to the film who used to be the court composer, but is now a harpsichord with a dental (or rather key) problem.
Regardless, the cast does an amazing job, including Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, and Josh Gad, not to mention Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellan, Emma Thompson, and the rest of them.
Overall, it may not be the original, but it's still a good film in its own right.

One Last Time...

Wolverine, one of the greatest heroes of all time, has been through a lot. After making his debut in The Incredible Hulk #181, he went to the pages of the X-Men, and then to the big screen when Hugh Jackman picked up the claws to add the classic Logan to the X-Men's movie roster. So it came as no surprise that he would get some movies of his own. The only problem is, they didn't work all the time. X-Men Origins: Wolverine ultimately butchered the iconic origins of the character (and Deadpool) with a sloppy story and poor CGI. The Wolverine was certainly an improvement, but it still had its issues in that it was being held back by a PG-13 rating.
So, when the news that Hugh Jackman decided to step down from the role, the heads at 20th Century Fox wanted him to go out on top, and boy did they make that happen. Logan is by far one of the greatest X-Men films, and one of the greatest superhero films of all time, coming close to the legends that are The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2, but unlike those two films, it pushes all the boundaries it can while still delivering a superhero/noir film.
The story may seem pretty basic, but holds a hardcore look unlike any the world has ever seen. In the future, did Logan's actions save the X-Men from the horror of a Sentinel ruled world? Briefly, for now the world is a barren waste, and the X-Men are gone, killed by the ailing Charles Xavier's own troublesome telepathic powers. Logan now watches him on a hideout along the Mexican border, trying to hide from the world. But when a small girl shows up, Logan's life is changed as he tries to take her to a hiding place, ultimately discovering himself along the way.
Sounds basic enough right? Well, it would be, if that story didn't include some of the most gritty, gory action scenes ever seen in cinema history. This time, Wolverine doesn't hold back whatsoever. He swears, he lets the claws fly out, and he doesn't show any mercy whatsoever. But this isn't the humorous type of violence like Deadpool, rather, it's the kind you'd see in classic noir films, as evidenced by the tone. None of his enemies stand a chance; even an 11 year old girl with his powers proves to be just as brutal as he is.
Speaking of which, this is the best performances from Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart I've ever seen. The former is finally allowed to be the broken, confused, yet strong and brutal character he was meant to play since the beginning, while the later plays off of the vulnerable, yet optimistic leader of the X-Men, now holding the loss of the X-Men forever within the confines of his failing mind. But the true star of the show is Daphne Keen as X-23, Wolverine's young clone, who plays off the character like a professional Oscar Winning actress; hard, brutal, yet vulnerable.
Overall, if you want to see Hugh Jackman sheath out the claws one last time, then this is the movie to see, in both color and black and white.

A few years ago, Warner Brothers and NetherRealm Studios introduced Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting video game that pitted the best of the best from the DC Universe against each other. The first time around, it involved one world - a world of which the Joker tricked Superman into killing Lois Lane and destroying Metropolis, leading the Man of Steel to kill the Clown Prince of Crime and take over the world - meeting another, as the Batman of this dystopian Earth recruits heroes from the Prime Reality to save his own. This time around though, the threat has grown even worse...
5 years after toppling Superman's regime, Batman is now trying to rebuild the world; a world of which becomes threatened when a powerful evil known as Brainiac appears. This cybernetic being, gifted with a 12th level intellect, is determined to not only add Earth's knowledge to his collection, but also claim Superman, the only survivor of Krypton's destruction. In order to stop him, Batman and Superman must put aside their differences and fight to beat him.
First of all, the game has great potential. Story wise, this is one of the best DC stories I've seen involving Brainiac, and each character, no matter how small a role, plays a part of some sort. Even more surprising is the inclusion of two different endings, where choosing a side allows the player to determine the fate of the Earth itself.
Secondly, the fighting roster is extremely diverse. Returning from the first game is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, Cyborg, and Aquaman from the heroes side, and Joker, Harley Quinn, Bane, Black Adam, and Catwoman from the villains side. Now, the heroes welcome Black Canary, Firestorm, Blue Beetle, Robin, Doctor Fate, Swamp Thing, and the plucky new Supergirl, while the villains add in Gorilla Grodd, Brainiac, Darkseid, Poison Ivy, Deadshot, Scarecrow, Cheetah, and Atrocitus. DLC Characters feature Red Hood, Starfire, and Mortal Kombat's Sub Zero, and many more will join them later.
Voice acting wise, this is extremely superb acting in any video game. Once again Kevin Conroy slips into the cowl of Batman, who's broken, but more hopeful, yet still the same hero we know and low. Superman's again voiced by George Newbern, who nails the broken and more hardened Superman right on the head. Joining the game is the silky smooth voice of Jeffery Combs as Brainiac, who adds the much needed sinister edge to this classic DC villain. Meanwhile, Laura Bailey brings Supergirl to life in a way that combines the innocence and charm of Melissa Benoist's tv version, yet adds the rage of watching a world burn.
If there is one thing I will say that's kind of a little frustrating, it's the gear system. Don't get me wrong; the Gear System is a nice little improvement, but it can be a little bit frustrating to not get gear you actually want or need. Nonetheless, it's still a nice touch that needs a little work.
Overall, this is one of the best fighting games I've ever played, and I can't wait to see what's next for Injustice 3.

From the creators of Despicable Me and Minions comes the latest installment Illumination has to offer. Ever wonder what your pets do when you're not around? Well, they're doing what you do: socializing, listening to music, eating from the fridge, watching TV, you name it. And for one dog named Max, life's plenty good because all he need's is his bowl of food, a bed to sleep in, and the comfort of his owner. One day, his life is turned upside down when his owner brings home a bigger, burlier, and much sloppier dog named Max, who quickly steals his thunder and all the love and attention he used to get. Their rivalry then takes a turn when they end up getting separated, and must work together to get back home.
If this plot sounds familiar, then yes, this is indeed the same (or at least very similar) plot as Toy Story, only this time, it involves anthropomorphic animals instead of living toys. You could say that this is Illumination copying Pixar, but it's not entirely. It's a very similar premise to be certain. But, Illumination puts their own spin on it by making something fun and entertaining for the whole family with just as heartwarming a message, and a slightly different spin with a villain who's deviousness is hidden behind a cute exterior.
Overall, watch the Secret Life of Pets today, and forget your troubles.
