In my opinion, this is really the only option for Mac users. Sure, it works for PC users, but like other Apple products, it works exceptionally well with Apple products. It serves your needs as an extremely fast AC wireless router and it provides ample external storage space for you Mac. I love that it will back up your Mac automatically, which leaves the worry out of the equation.

Sure, you can use this as a standalone video streamer (i.e. Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc.), but it is really intended to work exceptionally well with other Apple products. That is, if you have an iPhone, iPad, iPod, Macbook, iMac, Mac Pro, or Mac Mini, it allows you to extend or mirror your screen.
I would recommend this to anyone considering using a streaming device. Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and MyWD don't work nearly as fluently as the Apple TV.
