I would like to have this unit window mounted in the top half of the window. Since this does not have a slide-out chassis, would I still be able to mount it as such?
Not recommended, but depends on what it will be sitting on top of. I once connected a chain to the back and connected it to the ceiling above it

Can multiple units be controlled by the one app?
Don't know from experience but I believe so, because the App let me assign a name to it. (Bedroom A/C, Living Room A/C etc..).

It's kinda meant to stand straight up. It's a big router, I'm sure you can rig something up but it's not really made that way.
