Can Chapman ever find true love?
on December 20, 2015

Verified Purchase:Yes
Season One sent us spiraling with it's finale as we left off with Chapman committing a pretty violent crime inside a federal prison. Now how far will Piper Chapman go to upset everybody close to her while just trying to find herself?
I don't know if an actual women's penitentiary has daily lesbian trysts in the chapel, or if they're allowed to grow their own vegetables. But if I was allowed to imagine they could, I'd imagine a lot would go down like it does in the second season of Orange is the New Black.
A now all star cast supported by newcomers and veterans, along with even more criminal antics and personal history flashbacks makes this season just as engaging and delicious as the first. Also, more naked chicks and people getting electrocuted. Good stuff.

Another voyager sci-fi flick that excels!

Everyone complains that there's nothing new in sci-fi; everything's a reboot, same story x has same story as y, too many paradoxes! Well rest assured, Ex Machina takes a break from your sci-fi conventions and puts your faith in humanity back on the table.
The plot is neat and clean; multibillion dollar mogul invites employee to homestead to test run a prototype female A.I. humanoid. If it passes, profit, and we break the A.I./human barrier. A win-win. If it fails....
OK, so one trope is still going to never die. Ex Machina is actually a thriller, masquerading as a sci-fi movie. How far will you go to prove somebody else's autonomy? How far will you go to test your own creation and pit it against humanity's massive ego? How far can humans trust machines, and likely how far will machines trust humans?... Wait, can machines trust ANYTHING?!
If these sound like questions you need answers to, then Ex Machina is a film that will make you wish you never asked them. It will also leave you gloriously pleased by it's gorgeous cinematography, it's gratuitous sexuality, and it's garish shockers.
Ex Machina is a film that needs to be purchased (on Blu-ray) so you can be re-shocked again and again.

Pass on it. I have a Remington model that I purchased 3 years ago, and I thought that one was poor. I was wrong.
This guy has a single blade side, so turning it in convex areas, i.e. your nose and ears, can be troublesome. Two sides of blades would have helped this task. While on the subject of blades, the trimmer's blades are comparatively dull. They also make a static nose when they do cut your facial hair. True, you can wash the unit, what's that going to solve when it doesn't trim hair properly?
Tried it with the attachment combs, 1. they are not numbered or even stamped to show which way they go on or what size they are, and 2. they push the blade too far away from the face! They also stick on too tight when you put them on, so you can't pull them off easily.
The one thing that this trimmer has is it's water resistance. That is not enough to save a product, especially when it's intended purpose is grooming, not bathing with.
The search for the perfect, quality innocuous men's facial trimmer is still ongoing. Here's hoping it's in 2016!

The first season of Hannibal follows FBI Agent Will Graham's (Hugh Dancy) as he becomes increasingly immersed in his efforts to find a brutal serial killer. When Special Agent Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) pairs him with a highly skilled psychiatrist - who, unbeknownst to them, is the perpetrator himself, notorious serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) - Will questions his own sanity as his cannibalistic partner subjects him to a series of mind games.

Doesn't even do this series justice. I have no idea how this passed for network television. There's full blown mutilation in this show, blood splatters nearly every ten minutes, so much gore and dismembered body parts. Ironic because not one nipple or full on buttocks shot was OKed by Standards and Practices. And yet, it's gorgeous. The cinematography and direction of this show is something I've yet to see in a series. Think House and True Detective, on speed.
OK, the good first. Beautiful, on point, eye popping, deeply thought out, tons of foreshadowing. This season has a clear direction and it doesn't dither one minute. We watch several characters and their decent into the dark side. Obviously Hannibal is going to be the character most hate to love (and Mads delivers in spades), but the true breakout character is Hugh Graham (played by Hugh Dancy). The picture pops on Blu-ray, the sound is perfect, voices are clear, the menu and it's sounds are subtle and spot on. Every time you press OK on the remote, a single deep heartbeat bass thump pulses, gloriously! The music is scored perfectly for the series, and there's an extensive special features vignette of the composer, along with the great deal of special FX added to Hannibal. Hannibal must have cost an absolute fortune to make because the quality is unreal for network television.
Now the Bad. It can get a little too dramatic. We see Will fight the decent and reality all through out the season. We see Hannibal fight his own personal demons, he is not impervious to his actions or the actions of others. And we see Graham's boss Jack Crawford (good ol' Lawrence Fishburne) get overwhelmed with everybody else around him stumbling on their inner demons. The result is a lot of exposition and overly done dramatic dialogues which somehow manage to stay mellow dramatic at the same time. Tempers, outside of Fishburne's character Agent Crawford, rarely elevate. Speaking of dialogue, this show commands your full attention. It's one of those shows, where previous instances dictate what happens next. It is not a show that you can flip on and just watch whenever. Jump ahead one episode, and suddenly flashbacks and sequences that you haven't witness will completely spoil what happens next. In short, it's a marathon show.
Now the Ugly. People are dying left and right. This is a fault a lot of series stumble into; the type of series it is winds-up being over-dominates what occurs throughout it's run. In an analogy with House, medical issues pop-up more than they would in real life. In Hannibal, people die left and right, there one minute, dead the next. The problem with this is that it desensitizes ACTUAL death in the show. The result is characters who become mellow dramatic when any character suddenly disappears from the series. Also, this series is NOT a mood elevator. It will leave you emotionally drained due to the gore, the darkness, the depressing nature of what's happening to the characters, and the overall mood of the series. The few characters who are comic relief see very little screen time, and even when they're on it's a little too campy to make up for the large amounts of carnage just witnessed. Like True Detective and other darker series, do not watch when you want a feel good heart warming sensation. Further exasperating this is that you need to remember what previously happened, which means you'll be watching A LOT of horror, for long stretches of time (each episode in the 1st season is ~45 minutes). That's a lot of commitment for something very dark, with very little humor, and commands a lot of time and attention. The payoff is one of the best television series to grace the airwaves since Twin Peaks.
Highly recommended, but you need to be in the right mindset for viewings.

That picture though.
There's pretty, and then there's Howl's Moving Castle. Production levels for this one must have been 4x the amount for Spirited Away, and that's saying something! I think the studio had a lot more to work with after the formers earnings were collated. Howl's Moving Castle has yet to be trumped by anything I've seen in anime, yet. It's that detailed. Every. Single. Scene has something intricate and individually detailed and moving. The full ROYGBIV spectrum is utilized in this film. If there was a visual equivalent to the hypersonic audio effect on Blu-ray, Howl's Moving Castle would have shattered the analogous record. It's that wondrous.
Christian Bales blesses us with his voice in this entry. I'm a Bale fan. I like the DKT, American Psycho, and yes I even like Terminator Salvation. This is another example of how Disney nailed the choices for the American dub. Bales deep, contemplative voice makes Howl more than just a tall Japanese pretty boy. It makes him sound like he knows what he's doing half the time, even though we know Howl is yet another one of Miyazaki's misunderstood troubled male trope protagonists. That's not the only gem, Billy Crystal, Emily Mortimer (Shutter Island), Josh Hutcherson and Jenna Malone of Hunger Games fame are also casted in the dub, and it's just so much fun to hear their voices when they were young and fresh in the industry! I get this same delight in hearing Claire Daines in Princess Mononoke, Shia LeBouf in Nausicaa, and Anna Paquin in Castle in the Sky. But it's the unsung heroine in this film who nails the voicing role; the late Jean Simmons. Jean plays Grandma Sophie after the spell has been sprung on her in the beginning of the movie. Jeans voice doesn't miss a beat, lips and sounds sync perfectly and inflection is perfect in every scene. Attitude by the protagonist never dithers and it demonstrates just how powerful and emotionally invested in feminism Miyazaki is.
Extras on this release are more exhaustive than the other Ghibli entries. There's storyboard, Japanese and American trailers, video segments interviewing Bale and the other voice actors, and Miyazaki touring at Disney's Pixar studios. The extras honestly held my attention for about 12 minutes, and then I was ready to watch the movie again or put in another movie. I wish one of these days they'd release a director's commentary on one these films, but given the language barriers and Miyazaki's general demeanor, snippets are probably the correct choice. To bad, as the man clearly has a motivated and imaginative mind that we only get glimpses at.
Anyways, TLDR: buy the movie! 5 stars!!

Cannot go wrong with Miyazaki!

Castle in the Sky is in the same playing field as Nausicaa and My Neighbor Totoro; classics that will stand the tests of time. For an 80's film, it hasn't aged at all, considering it came out around the same time Transformers the Movie did. And on Blu-ray with the Hi-Def treatment (and some minor cleaning), the film is a brand new experience for anyone who has seen it before.
The picture quality in this outing is on par with other previous releases from around this time. Colors, primaries especially, are more robust than the DVD counterpart, lots of pinks and indigos. None of the typical videotape artifacts are present. That being said, dim lit sequences (the third act especially) do show dust anomalies with the frames, but I believe this is more of problem with the technology in general, not necessarily the individual films. Nausicaa has this issue too, as does Akira, and both of those films have been worked over many times.
Sound quality on the Blu-ray is better than many other similar entries. At no point do I have to change the volume level to hear Ponsu's voice over the score. While on that topic, I prefer the American dubbed track over the Japanese track in this film. Mark Hammel (Luke Skywalker people), Anna Paquin (True Blood), James Van Der Beek (Dawson's Creek), Tress McNeil (EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN, but especially Futurama) will peek your attention as they were perfect casting choices for the American dub. Andy Dick is in there too, see if you can decipher which of the pirate bros. he is! I love Disney/Studio Ghibli colabs for this reason. They always get the perfect voice actors for the dubs.
All of the typical Miyazaki plot and character tropes are in Castle in the Sky. Powerful indomitable women, misunderstood males, technology vs. nature, flying, aircrafts, eggs, obligatory food and eating segments, it's all there. The storyline is somewhere between National Treasure and Goonies. I'll let you watch the movie and decide which of the 20 typical plotlines it's predominantly comprised of.
As for extras, this is one of the few that doesn't have too much additional content. There's some sneak peeks, a storyboard of the film, and that's about it. But for a film that helped spark the Studio Ghibli craze and set the course for other installments like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky is an addition to your anime library that you shouldn't pass up!

EVEN BETTER!!!

What on Earth could possibly top season one of Arrested Development? How about a doozy of a second season that piles on even more of the best satire ever written by man.
When I found out about both seasons 1 and 2 being sold at my local Best Buy for $5 a piece, well frankly...
"...I just blue myself"
Fans of the series couldn't ask for a better deal, and the new slim cases these came in (though slightly cracked on the edges from thrashers in the bin) are even better than their original releases. Of course, a new fifth season from Netflix after the awesome return of the series in it's fourth season is even more reason to return to the hype this series effortlessly instills in it's viewership. This three-disc set contains all 22 episodes from the Emmy Award-winning first season of the situation comedy Arrested Development. Each is presented in an anamorphic widescreen transfer that preserves the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include three commentary tracks recorded by series creator Mitchell Hurwitz. He is joined by many of the cast members on one of those commentary tracks. Deleted scenes, original songs by David Schwartz, and footage from a panel discussion on the show held at the Museum of Television & Radio round out this excellent collection from 20th Century Fox.

GET THIS RIGHT NOW!!!

My life changed three weeks ago when I found both Seasons 1 and 2 at Best Buy, in the DVD bin. What Arrested Development was doing in a bin for $5 a piece I will never know, but there's never been a wallet pulled out faster than on that day.
A bad episode (which doesn't exist) of Arrested Development trumps ANY episode of Friends, of Big Bang, of Two and a Half Men. Even heavy weights like The Simpsons and Seinfeld fumble at the might of Arrested's sharp satire and fierce pacing. It is has a disturbingly large fan base following for a reason. Season 1 is just the foreplay, Season 2 will blow your mind and make your toes curl! Ongoing gags, perfectly timed punch lines, the best double entendres in television, Arrested Development is the sharpest writing and funniest series that's been made in 20 years. It also one of the few shows filmed in HiDef that isn't actually released on Blu-ray (for some seemingly unknown reason), at least not in the U.S. But none of that subtracts from the value of this overly stuffed 22 episode comedy series.
My favorite thing about the set is the entire casts' commentary tracks! Ever wanted to know what Will Arnett has to say about David Cross and Jason Bateman, here you go!!!

For the people who are writing online to skip this 4-movie Blu-ray collection, get your heads examined! Dumb and Dumber is worth the purchase alone, but then they had to go and throw in Wedding Crashers AND Horrible Bosses into it! You cannot go wrong.
* I should make something clear right now; the Inappropriate Edition disc for Horrible Bosses in this collection contains NO additional special features! It is wrongly advertised on the box, but it is false! It's just the movie. All the other movies have their respective special features.
This is THE set to have for anybody who likes recent modern comedies. I would have taken Office Space over Hall Pass on this set to make it the definitive collection (sadly it's Fox, not WB), but that's just my opinion. All movies are beautiful (yes, even Dumb and Dumber's humble 1994 release) visually, all in at least 5.1 Dolby, and just as funny today as they were yesterday. Laugh again as Lloyd points to the bird cage screaming "Our pets heads are falling off!", as Vincent Vaughn regales us with the concept of motor boating, as Jennifer Aniston drops the P word while braless in a lab coat, and while we compare racial stereotypes of men's'... packages, during the most awkward scene in Hall Pass. All in glorious Hi Def!!!

In the Top 5 of all-time animes.

Few animes can match masterpieces such as Akira and Ninja Scroll. Mononoke is neck and neck with Spirited Away for doing so. The film is like no other Miyazaki film out there with violence, a leading male protagonist and NO FLYING around! How is this even a Miyazaki flick if nobody's flying around wildly?...
Well, it's still Miyazaki all the way through. The animation style is totally his, the varied environmental viewpoints are Miyazaki to a T, and of course there's the obligatory food pr0n and indomitable females. My only two gripes with Princess Mononoke are that it's a little on the blue side (not figurative, the color palette is bluer than most), and of course the notoriously bad voice acting and dubbing. I love Billy Bob Thorton, he does a great job on this outing, but everyone else is either muddled, or completely missed any emotional notes they were supposed to hit. Other than that, it's a great movie, and even better in glorious HD on Blu-ray! The animation is crystal with no noticeable artifacting, and the music fidelity is the best you can find on an anime in 5.1. Extras are ho-hum though. It seems that Disney is adding promotional stuff over extra content in their releases, as Nausicaa has this same lack of note worthy extras. The only extras I'd recommend from one of these Ghibli/Disney collaborations is from Spirited Away, which has exhaustive extra content.
Buy this, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Nausicaa if you truly love Miyazaki's movies. They are all superb and truly the cream of the crop.
