One of the Good Ones

I shouldn't enjoy this series, but I do. It's pumped out nearly every year, and almost all of them are the same. But with that said, sailing the seas in Black Flag and meeting the figures of the Italian Renaissance are some of my favorite moments in gaming, and I keep coming back to this series hoping for that same feeling.
After the dull Unity and overrated Syndicate, I wasn't expecting anything out of this one. I didn't care much for the setting either--I knew Cleopatra and Ptolemy, but what other historical figures really mattered during this time period? Well, maybe it's because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I love this game.
The combat has seen a much needed overhaul, and it can actually get tricky at times. The setting is breathtaking as usual, and I want to know who at Ubisoft programs water effects because they are the best in the business. The story...eh, it's alright, but this series isn't really much more than an excuse to go on a history tour. Sidequests aren't much to write home about as they're usually either fetch quests or outpost infiltrations but they fill the gaps well enough.
The main complaints I have are two things: holding the up button to "sense" treasure, and Layla Hassan. The treasure sense is annoying because guess what? You're gonna press that every five steps to make sure you get every treasure. Why didn't Ubisoft just highlight treasures instead of adding this annoying process on top? Either hide all treasures, or highlight all treasures, don't give us the in-between. Second, Layla Hassan is the most unlikeable person ever. She isn't tough, she's mean, arrogant and entitled. If a male character acted like her, I would hate them just as much. Everything in her backstory makes her out to be spoiled and obnoxious, but we're somehow supposed to identify with this awful person. Maybe it's a generational thing. Between the bland Desmond and the unlikeable Layla, I'll take Desmond. Unfortunately I'll have to continue seeing Layla's story unfold as I play Kassandra in the upcoming Odyssey.
So to sum up, annoying modern character and minor gameplay annoyance aside, if you're a fan of the series, I would definitely recommend this game.

A Great Collection of Horribly Dated Games
on June 22, 2018

Frustrating, pretentious, charming. The Kingdom Hearts series is a bizarre combination that somehow barely works. Its repetitive grind is tiresome as you fight wave after wave after wave of the same enemies every few steps, but it's worth it to experience the Disney magic. However, this collection only highlights the issue that slowly ruined the series--instead of keeping things simple and clean, Tetsuya Nomura turned it into a sullen, convoluted, pretentious bore by the second entry: the antithesis of the otherwise lively Disney aesthetic. Mechanically, the games' cameras can be unwieldy and the gameplay itself is monotonous at best, so these games don't exactly stand the test of time.
With that said, there is a ton of content in this collection, as you'll be getting Kingdom Hearts I and II, Chain of Memories, Birth by Sleep, as well as cutscene collections from 358/2 Days and Re:CODED. If you are a diehard fan, or a person like me who only really enjoyed the first entry but wanted to go back down memory lane, this collection is still worth the low price point.

Surprisingly Strong

I was one of the skeptics going into this game. I wasn't keen on the changes to combat, the homogenization into another open-world game, and what seemed to be clear imitation of The Last of Us. I'm glad to say that most of the worries I had were unfounded and God of War is a fantastic game. It's easily one of the best in the series if not the best, but it requires an open mind and willingness to accept change. There are some things I prefer about the previous entries, but there are many more that I prefer about this one. The story is compelling, a first for the series, the combat still remains serviceable (though not quite as button-mashingly fun as previous games), and the exploration is surprisingly interesting in a Metroidvania/Arkham way.

A worthy addition to his catalogue

I don't care much for Cat Stevens myself but I bought this for my dad, and I'll give his opinions:
The songs are for the most part just as good as vintage Cat Stevens. His lyrics still have depth to them, there's some clever orchestration to his musical accompaniment, and his voice doesn't sound like it has aged a day. Overall, if you're a Cat Stevens fan, it is absolutely worth a purchase.

Bruno Mars has never been a terribly original artist, and he shows that again here as he injects 80s pop into his sound. However, nostalgia for better eras of pop music is what makes Bruno Mars enjoyable. You will find plenty to enjoy on this album whether you are a fan or not and I definitely recommend it.

...I apologize for that title.
I don't use them, but my son loves it. Plastic build quality is good, fine detail, and the in-game rewards are okay, though remember when games had cheat codes instead of having to pay for them? I guess getting a toy in exchange is better than a line of DLC code, but it's also an expensive toy (cheaper with GCU though, thanks Best Buy!).
I guess you already know if you want Amiibo or not and I doubt this one will change your mind.

Fun Gameplay, Cringeworthy Aesthetics

First off, I'd give this game a 3.5 if I could, but I rounded up. It's a fun game overall. Battles start out somewhat breezy but eventually become 5 minute slogs, though fortunately the battle system remains fun since it is so rhythmic. Hopefully a patch comes through to better balance enemy HP, because you will find that it makes more sense to avoid battles and do quests instead, and no game should be balanced to avoid playing it. The environments continue to show that Monolith are masters of environment design and are a joy to explore...or would be with an industry-standard map system. This game astounds in how many ways it is both well-designed and more archaic than a first-generation PS2 game.
Now for the worst parts of the game. The story might as well be "Generic Anime: The Game". There is nothing that you haven't seen before in this game. The writing is amateur and the story hits every cliche that every mid-tier anime series has hit for at least 4 decades. The voice acting is very spotty as well, though not as bad as the internet has made it seem. Then there's...the women. If you're a young boy or teenager, well, you'll have some material to keep you occupied in your room for a while. But otherwise if you're too old for this stuff, it's just embarrassing and is the most obvious pandering I have seen in a good while. Before someone gets mad though, I'm not going to let this affect my rating, as the game has enough technical problems as it is.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is certainly not a worthy successor to its forebear, but somehow it has maintained my interest more easily, so I have to give it credit for that. It's worthwhile as a game, but for anyone looking for anything more than a time-waster until much better games come out next year, I suggest you look elsewhere.

A Return to Form for the Mario Series
on November 3, 2017
Posted by: raihidara
Verified Purchase:Yes
After a long stretch of increasingly generic and conservative Mario titles, Odyssey feels like a breath of fresh air, much like Breath of the Wild. It doesn't reinvent the series like BotW, but rather refines what made the 3D Marios great. If there is one criticism to be leveled against it, it's that at times the game feels patronizing. Moons are given for doing the most basic of tasks at times, and the difficulty is extremely low, to the point that this is almost a "baby's first" Mario, at least until much later in the game. Otherwise it is fantastic and an absolute joy to play.
Also, a note for parents: the E10+ rating is ridiculous. There is nothing objectionable in this game compared to previous entries in the series, and I would suggest you look up the ESRB's exact reasons for the rating to see just how unreasonable it is.

No real comedy

I'm a huge South Park fan, I watch the show religiously, loved the movie and The Stick of Truth, but there is barely anything funny in this game. In making this game longer than SoT, they stretched it out with jokes that fall flat and scenarios that just aren't very interesting, especially compared to its predecessor. Fights also suffer--battles were perhaps too quick and easy in SoT, but now they're too long and easy, which is much worse in my opinion. The increased strategy does make them slightly more interesting, though reducing button prompts to the same combinations for everything makes them feel mundane. Either give us a variety of combinations or just get rid of them. Overall I still enjoyed it and don't regret my purchase, but this was a significant jump down in quality and I hope that if Matt & Trey make another game they will deliver something much better.
