This starts off as a fun movie about a group of friends, and once it gets to a tough decision they have to make, it takes a turn to something darker. It's a good exploration of circumstances and pride. It looks and sounds stellar. And the retrospective extras are really good as well.

I enjoyed Patriots Day as a police procedural thriller, and thought it accomplished what it set out to quite well. The 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was a disheartening tragedy, and its heroes and victims should to be honored. In that regard, I appreciate what they were setting out to do with this film. I can be more than my share of cynical, but I can't be cynical enough to believe that this wasn't an earnest tribute to those heroes and victims. My enjoyment of this film isn't about religion or politics, but rather the thrilling tension I thought it provided in spades.

I hadn't seen it since I was a kid, and rewatching it this week I was completely enamored and surprised that I had overlooked it all these years. It's one of my favorite Disney animated films now. I'm not sure why it wasn't one of my favorites growing up, but adult me loved it. Sweet and charming, yet it isn't afraid to hit children with the sad truth about life. Plus, it's gorgeously animated to boot. I want to watch it again this week, just because I can't stop thinking about the artistry.

If you own the previous Blu-ray, I highly recommend upgrading to this edition for the hours of extras and two additional cuts of the film. The Picture Quality is even better on this disc. If you dont own the film at all yet, it's a no-brainer.

I recommend this for those who are interested in the massive lot of extras on the new bonus disc. The extras were all available over multiple DVD releases, but now you can have them all consolidated on one Blu-ray. It also comes with a digital copy of the theatrical cut. Other than these things, it's the same great disc one that has been available for years. So, double dip if you care about the extras, pass if you already own the Blu-ray and dont watch extras.
Al Pacino and Robert de Niro appear on-screen together for the first time in writer/director Michael Mann's intense crime drama. Frazzled LAPD detective Lt. Vincent Hanna (Pacino) is out to stop a group of highly skilled professional thieves headed by mastermind Neil McCauley (De Niro), who's looking for one last score. The stakes rise to dangerous levels as Hanna and McCauley become locked in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, Tom Sizemore, and Jon Voight co-star. 170 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks English DTS HD Master Audio 5.1, Spanish DTS 5.1, French DTS 5.1; Subtitles English (SDH), Spanish, French; featurettes; theatrical trailers; deleted scenes; more.

Michael Mann's crime opus comes to Blu-ray for the not-first time with a remastered disc that looks a little better than the WB disc, in my opinion, but sounds significantly better. The new extras a very interesting, namely the odd at times, insightful at others, Academy panel hosted by Christopher Nolan. The price is very low for a newly released remaster. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. It was about on par with Justice League vs. Teen Titans, or maybe a little better. For some context, I was never into the older comics, but I watched the mid-2000's cartoon when it aired. I love the team, and the voice work is strong. The animation is great during action scenes, and mediocre throughout the rest of the film. WB and DC are cutting corners, and it shows. The animation is choppy, the writing is getting worse. I have numerous complaints, but at the end of the day, the action is great, and I don't want to see DC's animated originals go away, so I support them. This is not among their worst efforts, but certainly not among their best either. It's right about down the center. It has the potential to improve with more viewings, but I doubt it. Still, I recommend to fans. Most likely fans only.

Split was not a film I was excited about, so much so that I skipped it in theaters altogether. But, from what I heard about it, I knew I had to see it. I'm glad that I gave it a chance, because I enjoyed it quite a bit. James McAvoy is always great, and relative newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy is great here as well. This is M. Night Shyamalan's best movie since Signs, in my opinion. Split is well worth seeing if you like his earlier films, and a must-buy Blu-ray if you saw and liked the film.
Dorothea (Annette Bening) is a 55-year-old single mother raising her 15-year-old son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) in late-1970s Santa Barbara, California. Fearing Jamie may require more than she alone can offer, she seeks help from Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a photographer and cervical cancer survivor, and Jamie's childhood friend, Julie (Elle Fanning). The effects the members of this unconventional family have on one another are chronicled in writer/director Mike Mills' semi-autobiographical seriocomedy. Billy Crudup co-stars. 118 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio; Subtitles English (SDH), Spanish; audio commentary; featurettes.

As a 25-year-old multiracial male, a film centered around three white women of varying ages in the end of the 70's may not seem like it's up my alley, but this film moved me beyond description. I have a difficult time summarizing exactly how I feel about it, but know that it is a near masterpiece, and yet another underappreciated gem of 2016, along with Silence. Annette Bening gives an Oscar worthy performance, and everyone in the cast is great as well. The music, the cinematography, both great. Where this film shines is in its writing and its sense of time and place. Its a wonderful film to let wash over you.
Blu-ray + Digital HD edition. Martin Scorsese's Silence tells the story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) - at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden.

Silence is a beautiful film, both aesthetically and thematically. Despite positive reviews, it seemingly came and went with little fanfare, and only managed a single nomination at the Academy Awards for its gorgeous cinematography. I also enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge, but of the two Andrew Garfield spiritual movies that came out last year, I highly recommend Silence to anyone with the patience to appreciate it. Hopefully it will be given another look in the future. FYI, Best Buy has the incorrect artwork on their website, so if you don't receive the cover pictured on the site, don't worry.
