Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke star in the fifth season of the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, a show based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George R.R. Martin and adapted for television by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. All ten episodes of Season Five are featured in this collection, as Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) joins the mysterious House of Black and White to become an assassin, Daenerys (Clarke) and Tyrion (Dinklage) join forces, Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) continues her quest for power at the expense of Cersei (Headey), and the villainous Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) continues to leave a trail of terror.

Lots of stuff happens in season 5, but much of it seems arbitrary in the extreme. That tendency started in season 2 and is really out of hand at this point. The Blu-ray looks fabulous and some of the extras are decent, but I doubt I'll return to this season in the future. Die hard fans, though, will probably enjoy it more than I did.

There isn't much novelty in this brooding tale, but seeing quality actors like Hardy, Gandolfini and Schoenaerts in one movie is definitely a plus. The gloom and doom is piled on a bit thick, but it's worth a look if you're a fan of the thespians.

This version of "Far From the Madding Crowd" is entertaining, though it really distorts Hardy's novel, especially in its characterization of the heroine. Still, most of the actors are convincing and the scenic elements are first rate. Matthias Schoenaerts steals the show as Gabriel Oak. Definitely worth seeing before reading the more complex and fulfilling novel.
This gritty and intense release from the thrilling series Hannibal includes every episode from the show's third season, following the story of an FBI special agent and his budding relationship with a cunning forensic psychiatrist named Hannibal Lecter, whose dark inner world is steadily revealed.

"Hannibal" ends on a high note with episodes in Italy and a fetching performance by Gillian Anderson. The story has been engrossing all along, but I never really liked Hugh Dancy all that much. Mikkelsen grew on me with each season. Looks great on Blu-ray; extra features could be better, though.

The second season of "Arrow" held my interest, but the new code of being "something different" from the first year's killing machine limited the story line somewhat. Things improve once Oliver's island nemesis arrives in the city. The show looks great on Blu-ray, so be sure to buy that version, especially when it's offered at a mere $15.

Spike Lee turns in a polished heist film with a great cast and outstanding score by Terence Blanchard, which really booms out in the Blu-ray edition. Lee's commentary isn't bad, nor the featurette on his history with Denzel Washington, but the slick movie is the main attraction.

The creepy atmosphere is the main appeal of this film, which looks and sounds fine on Blu-ray. Nice extras, including the short film that generated the project. Commentary not bad, though I wish Del Toro had done second one. If slasher-type horror is your thing, you may want to skip this classier take on the genre.

I took a chance on this in hopes it would help make up for no more seasons of "Strike Back." Now I plan to get the subsequent seasons on Blu-ray. Good plotting, lots of action, and feature film quality visuals make this a must own for fans of down and dirty drama.

"Elizabeth: The Golden Age" isn't quite as strong as the first chapter starring Cate Blanchett, but it looks and sounds great on Blu-ray and carries over all the features of the DVD. Hard to pass up at Best Buy's bargain price.

Cate Blanchett's star turn makes "Elizabeth" a must-own movie, especially on a Blu-ray that enhances the historical setting and colorful costumes. The audio is strong too, and it's nice to have multiple language dubs and sub-titles. The extras are the same as on the DVD, but the commentary is worth a second listen even if you bought the original release.
