Great Animation, So-so Story

This film features lush and beautiful animation like most movies from Studio Ghibli. But its story — featuring characters and events from Ursula LeGuin's "EarthSea" novels — feels rushed and disjointed. I have not read the books, so I was coming into this story cold, and the movie failed to make me really care about the principle characters. So by about halfway through I really just was watching the film more for the beauty of the animation than anything else. So it's 5 stars for the animation, 3 stars for the story, overall 4 stars. Maybe a better film to rent than to buy, but if you are an EarthSea fan or a Studio Ghibli nut, maybe you'll love it more than I did.

This is the only movie I know of that makes me laugh so hard that I start crying before the movie titles are finished. It's wacky, goofy, off the wall, gross, silly, insightful, astute, and absolutely brilliant. And if you know your King Arthur/Grail mythology, it's even more brilliant. Bring out your dead! Test your virtue with the inhabitants of Castle Anthrax! Find a shrubbery! Beware the killer rabbit! Get this Blu-Ray today!!!
