JOY is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy's inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert de Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, and Virginia Madsen. Like David O. Russell's previous films, Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love.

Let's start here: the marketing for this movie was TERRIBLE. I didn't see it until a year after it came out in the theaters because it just didn't look appealing. Boy, was THAT wrong!
This bio-pic has grit and gravity, humor and humanity. Most people will find aspects or moments of their own lives, struggles, and families in this film, which leaves enough hope and inspiration at the end to motivate you to go out and conquer the world--an excellent movie for young adults with a positive and realistic role model for young women as the subject.

With several deviations from the comic book canon in the plot and a noticeable shift from the character development that took place in the first two X-Men films toward a faster-paced, more action-oriented, and choppier film, this film got mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Even directors of other movies in the franchise, Brian Singer and Matthew Vaughn, as well as the movie's own script writer, Simon Kinberg, criticized the movie for treating the Dark Phoenix story arch too superficially in a melange of characters and scenes that was either packed with too much material or lacking adequate length to present properly.
Having gotten that off my chest, I still like this film, and even Ebert and Roeper gave it two thumbs up. If you check your expectations for a canon portrayal of the X-Men at the door, and enjoy a good action-packed comic book movie, then this is a fun choice! My brother--a complete novice in comic book lore--saw this movie for the first time in 2017 and really liked it. For those who continue to harp on the fact that it isn't as good as X-Men and X-Men United, I direct them to the next installation--X-Men Origins--to see what an actual terrible movie with no redeeming qualities looks like.

The movie that garnered 7 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes, including the awards for Best Director for Kevin Costner, tells a timeless story that even James Cameron admits he copied in Avatar.
