Rome, 67 A.D. For many, Paul and Luke are the revered figures who authored of parts of the New Testament. We may know some of their story and some of the words they passed on, but not really have much sense of them as persons. This film is obviously not Scripture, but making use of the Scriptures it strives to give us some sense of who they were and why their faith in Jesus inspired them to be willing to sacrifice themselves.

I had heard the rave reviews from Broadway, but the style of music left me somewhat skeptical. I also am a lover of American history and feared how a musical would handle such important but complex historical currents. I was very pleasantly surprised. The music is accessible and understandable and carries the story. And while Hamilton certainly is not a documentary and puts words into people's mouths, it strives to respect history. I've listened to it three times already and will want to see it when the play comes back to town.

Burton's Eccentric Immagination

Tim Burton has one of the most off-the-wall and delightful imaginations among filmmakers and the Nightmare Before Christmas is a great example of this. It is hard to believe it was released 20 years ago. The animation and the music are very well done and beneath the story is itself is a lesson about good intentions going awry when we make assumptions and do not truly understand. Do not overlook the special features on the blu-ray, with two shorts by Burton and some helpful background information.

Classic Clint

Since it was initially released, I have not seen the entirety of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. What a treat to go back to the movie that brought Clint Eastwood to prominence. I watched it the other night with a friend who had never seen it. He enjoyed it and, even though I knew what was coming, so did I. Morricone's score is a highlight. While in my opinion Leone could have edited the film and shortened it a bit, this spaghetti western remains a classic.

Still holds up

It is now close to 50 years since The Night of the Living Dead was first released. This low budget horror flick caused a stir then and still holds up well today. I appreciate it because instead of focusing just on the creatures, the film places focus on the dynamics of the people trapped inside. It is great to have this available in a blu-ray edition. I was disappointed, however, that there are absolutely no special features provided with the disc. This would have been an opportunity for some background on the film and on Romero, interviews of how it affected people at the time, and a discussion of how this film inspired and shaped subsequent films of the genre.

Nausicaa, the princess of the people of the Valley of the Wind, sees more deeply than most. She is a heroine wise beyond her years, a woman of deep understanding and compassion as well as tremendous courage. With our concern about climate change, we see that Miyazaki was already contemplating our relationship with creation decades ago. I have become a great fan of this amazing director, but had never seen Nausicaa, his second feature film released in 1984. I highly recommend it.

Hidden Figures deserved its nomination for Best Picture. It is a compelling story well told. The story is "based on" true events -- though is not a documentary and takes liberties with the facts, telescoping certain events for clarity of story line and dramatic purposes. It does bring to light real contributions by some amazing people who have indeed been "hidden" all these decades. The film both enlightens and leaves you feeling good.

Expanding the Star Wars Universe

When I heard that new Star Wars stories would be forthcoming, I was skeptical. I feared these would be rip offs simply to rake in the cash. Rogue One, then, was a pleasant surprise. The story is good and captures at least some of the magic and excitement that made the original Star Wars so enjoyable. While not a great movie, it is a good one and well worth watching.
