I had a Cisco switch fail (eventually found out it was just the power supply) and replaced it with this one since I needed something right away. I would prefer to have the body made from metal, but since it outputs less heat than my other switches, I can live with plastic. As far as performance, this is just as fast as the Cisco. The only things I can think of to rate a switch is heat output and performance, and this scores well on both.

Does anyone recommend the extended warranty?
I'd like to keep the Garmin that I will purchase for a few years. Is purchasing the extended warranty really necessary? Are they that fragile?
These are definitely not fragile. The front seems to be tempered glass, so scratching is unlikely. I keep mine in a super hot black SUV, on the dash. That usually kills batteries and displays, but mine is a year old and works like day 1.
