Not sure if there an actual way to confirm if it's up scaling but from my little experiment you can see it I previously had a sumsung HD TV non 4k and recently purchased the 65 4k TV. When I first set the TV up I put both side by side to compare and I was amazed on the clarity and crisp the picture was it was like comparing DVD image and a blueray image. Now you might ask your self how old was the other TV well brought the 55 inch two years ago it wasn't that old and it wasn't the low end model either I was pretty amazed when I first purchased the TV and I think it still has an awesome picture and the only reason purchase the 4k was I wanted a bigger TV in the living room and I will use the smaller one in my home office. When I did the test they were both plugged in via hdmi to HD source and the TV were side by side. You won't be disappointed
