As with many VOIP systems, there are some characteristics that just can't match the reliability of the old landline. Sometimes there is enough of a time delay between the two ends of the conversation that it becomes annoying. Also, I have experienced a small number of dropped calls. However, once you get over the up front costs, the almost free monthly phone bill is nice. Ooma is a valid replacement for a landline. The faster your internet connection, the better this will perform. I had less performance issues when using a cable modem versus DSL.
What's great about it: Seemless replacement of landline
What's not so great: Delays that occur during calls and some dropped calls
