Excellent, mid-range convertible Travel laptop

The Asus Q406 Zenbook Laptop is an excellent mid-range convertible laptop that is useful for many uses of a PC based laptop that can meet many uses that one may have including browsing, streaming, social media, office applications, conferencing and mid-range gaming.
This review will be done in 3 parts – features, usage impressions, and pros/cons.
Features:
The features of the laptop are exactly where you expect them to be. Let’s talk some tech specifications first and then dive into other features such as ports and capabilities. This system is an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U powered system with 8 GB of non-removable onboard memory. The system has a native HD resolution of 1920x1080. While the system has 8 GB of RAM only 5.95 GB is accessible – I suspect the 2.05 GB of the RAM is being used to supplement the GPU part of the CPU but have been unable to confirm this. The screen is just shy of 14” in diagonal measurement and has a frameless nano edge to maximize the screen real estate. The battery life is right around 4 - 5 hours which is good for this style of laptop.

The system has dual band WIFI and Bluetooth capabilities. The system sports an array of ports – on the left side there are two USB 3 ports – one type C and one type A along with an HDMI port for video out. Unfortunately, the USB C port does not have alt-mode and won’t output video. The power port for the power block is also on this side of the device. The right side has the power button, LED Indicators for on-off and battery status, a 3.5 mm Mic/speaker/headset port, a USB 2.0 port and a microSD card slot.
This laptop is a convertible notebook and can support laptop, tent, stand and tablet configurations of the screen for different uses. This adds to the versatility of the device. When in Tent and tablet mode the keyboard and trackpad are disabled.
The system’s audio is a Harmon Kardon based system and sounds excellent. The unit weighs 3.9 pounds.
Usage Impressions:
This unit is easy to use, and its size makes it a nice device to carry as a travel machine with plenty of ports and capabilities. The convertible nature of this machine means that one can use it to watch movies in stand or tent mode and not have to have a secondary device to do this. When In tent mode the Harman Kardon Speakers seem to be pointed right at you and enhances the sound of the system. An interesting feature of the system is that the hinge of the screen also doubles as a lifting edge to aid in the ergonomic positioning of the system.
Usage Impressions:
This unit is easy to use, and its size makes it a nice device to carry as a travel machine with plenty of ports and capabilities. The convertible nature of this machine means that one can use it to watch movies in stand or tent mode and not have to have a secondary device to do this. From a performance standpoint, the system is plenty powerful for most day to day office style tasks. The Ryzen 5 3500U processor and the system also handled a tougher task with ease. I “stress” tested this system by rendering a High def video using Camtasia. While the CPU did max out at 100% CPU utilization twice during this test it never kicked the cooling fan to high speed and the system did not crash. During the test, the RAM usage peaked at about 64% and the GPU peaked at about 37% - all well within acceptable performance for a video render. The video was just over 3 minutes in length and the render took 6 minutes and 1 second to complete.
The system has an HDMI out port the works well and allows the system to have a secondary monitor when one wants to display something on a larger screen. It should be noted however that the USB C connector does not have ALT Mode. Considering the price point for this machine, it is an understandable omission. Should Asus elect to revise this machine at some point that would be a nice addition!

Outstanding, Bluetooth Universal Audio Transmitter

The Aluratek Universal Bluetooth Audio Transmitter with Bluetooth 5 (model ATB05F) is an outstanding and useful Bluetooth based audio transmitter. This is a must-have device for travelers, gym rats, and especially couples that may share a love of the same book or music and have a device with either a 3.5mm audio out or RCA audio out. This device’s single purpose is to adapt the audio output of devices that have either a 3.5mm headphone jack or RCA audio out to Bluetooth headphones or speakers.
The typical uses for this are in the gym – while you are using the treadmill or other cardio machines TVs - and Airplane entertainment systems. But since this device has both 3.5mm and RCA cables - the device can be used to adapt sound from a whole host of devices with audio out jacks. While testing I used my cell phone, my Kindle, and a TV. The device is extremely simple but also very effective. The sound was excellent and there was no noticeable lag. Having recently reviewed another similar item; the Aluratek device has one additional benefit in that it’s Bluetooth can simultaneously connect to a second Bluetooth device – thus a couple could listen to an audiobook together while walking, or even watch a movie together on a long haul flight to say Rome!
The device is rated for up to 10 hours of battery life but can be charged while in use which would be effective on longer flights. Knowing that battery life ratings typically are inflated I would expect this device to last 5 – 7 hours. The device has a 50-foot range. It has an auto-shutoff that turns the device off within 5 minutes of disconnection from an audio source. It comes with a 3.5 mm audio cable, a 3.5 mm to RCA cable, and a USB charging cable. The device has a 1-year warranty.
Pros: Simple and effective – does the job it was intended to. Dual Streaming capability. Price – the 29.99 price for this device is spot on and is a great deal.
Cons: None Noted.

Cord Cutter Recommended Amplified HDTV Antenna

The Mohu arc Pro Indoor Amplified HDTV Antenna is a very good antenna. It has a 60-mile range rating and is intended for use in the suburbs and that is exactly where I am located. This antenna comes with an integrated TV Signal Indicator to aid one is placing the antenna optimally to get the best signal. In addition, it comes with a First stage power injected amplifier (15db Pre-Amp Gain) to aid in reducing or eliminating pixelation and improve reception capabilities. The antenna also features advanced interference filtering, which is used to prevent interference from 3G/4G/5G signals.
Setup is very easy and straight forward and is aided by the TV signal indicators on the front of the antenna to aid in placement although I am not sure how precise the signal indicator is.
Overall throughout my tests, the unit attached to this antenna had a high-quality picture (1080p HD) and I noticed no pixelation using it. This was especially true on channels in the upper end of the HD channel range, which other antennas I own have had heavy pixelation on them. This antenna is also advertised as being 4K UltraHD Ready, but I was not able to test that since I don’t have any 4K devices and I am not sure any of my local channels are broadcasting at that level.

The twelve south AirFly is an extremely simple but effective single-function device that I highly recommend frequently travelers or gym rats to consider. This device’s single purpose is to convert audio from a 3.5 mm headphone jack to Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

The sound is good, but a little on the tinny side and there is a slight delay due to the analog to digital conversion and transmission time but not so long that it makes watching tv difficult. The AirFly supports Bluetooth 4.1
One can see the entire content of the box in the picture accompanying this review. The carrying case is a nice touch and will help keep the device together in your bag.

The Sony GTK-PG10 is a very nice portable/outdoor speaker system. This system is capable of AC and battery powered use (batteries are included) for up to 13 hours of time. The system includes multiple modes of operation – Bluetooth, FM Receiver, USB, Audio In, and Microphone mode.
The sound output is solid in all modes. The system retails for $249.00 which might be a bit pricey despite the excellent features of the system, it would be awesome if priced at $199.00.
Overall, the feature and capabilities warrant 5-stars but the price for me pulls it back a bit.

General Features:
The features of this speaker system are excellent. This system consists of two tweeters (stereo) and a woofer (mono) rated at 7 watts per channel. The system does provide very loud sound when the volume is turned up.

As stated, the system is capable of both AC power and battery power. The battery is rated at 13 hours of Bluetooth connected time; however, the manual does note that with the speakers turned up all the way the battery life will be reduced to approximately 5 hours.
Physically the system weighs just under 15 pounds and is capable of being mounted on a tripod. The tweeter sections of the system fold for portability and when extended can project the sound out further for outdoor use. Also, when extended the system has 4 cup holders and a small table section that can support your “picnic” which can make these nice for picnicking and tailgating.
Audio Features:
The system’s modes of operation are Bluetooth, USB, Tuner (FM), Audio, and Microphone mode. In each of the modes, the sound is of excellent quality and volume. Each mode is useful. A couple of modes do however have their quirks. In USB mode the USB device must be formatted in FAT16 or FAT 32 for the system to read – this is less and less likely with the size of USB devices these days. The other mode with a quirk is the microphone mode, where a ¼” Stereo plug is required to connect the microphone to the system. This is also a less and less common item. One can certainly obtain an adapter to use the more common 3.5mm plugs.

A very good shaver for mid to light shaving needs

The Norelco Shaver 6800 is a nice beginning rotary shave kit. It comes with the Share unit, a charging cord, a click on precision trimmer, and a cleaning brush. The shaving unit is powered by a Li-Ion battery with a 50-minute run time. The shaver allows for either as wet shave or a dry shave as the user desires.

My experience is that this unit works very well for light to medium shave needs. My first use was an attempt to take off about a month of by beard growth – something that I found the be a challenge. Since the first-use, I have used it for more regular shaving needs and with a little bit of learning I have adjusted the shave technique for a rotary shaver to obtain nice close shaves. The included precision trimmer is a nice accessory that takes care of one’s sideburns and other challenging spots.

Excellent AIO Device - if you don't Print Much!

My wife, who does genealogy and family history as a hobby, wanted a printer that would connect to her computer to mostly use for scanning pictures and documents. She was tired of waiting for me to go to work and then use my Epson all in one to do her scanning of old photographs.
I knew I made the right decision with the Brother MFC-J690DW Printer when I heard her scream, “Oh MY GOD! DAVID THANK YOU! THIS IS SO AWESOME! COME LOOK SEE THIS SCAN! OH MY GOD!”
I went in the room and she pulled up picture or two, showing me the original. She said, “ I think the scanned version is actually better than the original! How is that possible?” And sure enough it was an extremely good scan of the old photograph.
Now the drawbacks to the Brother MFC-J690DW Printer, at least for my wife is that she hasn’t been able to set a custom print area. She has to go into a program on her computer and trim the excess scan off, but the picture quality itself was totally worth the cost of the printer, according to her. According to the manufacturer, the MFC-J680DW has a scan resolution of 2400 X 1200 dpi (Flatbed) and 600 x 1200 dpi (Auto-Document Feeder).
The Brother MFC-J690DW Printer will do more than just scan though. It will also print and FAX. It does very well on Text Prints and a decent ink jet print on pictures. It’s relatively fast at printing with a 12 ppm black/10 ppm color rating. The ink cartridges are typicaly priced for Ink jets - running in at about 5.6 cents per pack black only and 16 cents per page color - thus the recommendation for not printing too much. The innobella color inks are good inks.
I think the other thing that my wife likes is that it is connected to our network wirelessly, so one less cable across her work area. It also has automatic scan to the cloud. This will allow scans to be shared easily to friends or to your phone or tablet.
Bottom line, you can’t go wrong with Brother MFC-J690DW Printer!

Additional features include removable and washable ear pads, they are sweat proof, had adjustable tension headbands (for fit adjustment), Ambient noise pass through capabilities (called Be Aware Audio) that can allow you to be more aware in a situation where you need to be more aware. Additional features include removable and washable ear pads, they are sweat proof, had adjustable tension headbands (for fit adjustment), Ambient noise pass through capabilities (called Be Aware Audio) that can allow you to be more aware in a situation where you need to be more aware. There are 3 EQ sound settings – JLab Signature, Balanced, and Bass Boost.
The headset folds up nicely and has a carrying bag included. They also have a 2-year warranty.
Usage Impressions:
The headset is a wonderful addition to one’s setup. The headset allows one to get the best sounds from any Bluetooth enabled device. I tested the headset using multiple tracks that were recommended for testing audio systems. These tracks were used for testing audio systems across the sound spectrum from deep base to soaring highs. The tracks allow testing spatial separation of sounds and the dynamic ranges of the piece being played. This headset had wonderful sounds form all these tracks and were the weakest when listening to tracks that had distinct sound separation, but this minor flaw does not detract from the overall quality of this headset. Listening to books from my kindle was also very nice with this headset.
Using the headset for phone calls was also very good, however, be sure to have the Be Aware Audio feature turned off for this – otherwise, you will hear every Nose around you including the wind.
The controls are located on the right earpiece and are thorough including multi-function buttons with one being a press and release action and the other being a “long press” action (1+ seconds) – for example the volume up and volume down buttons also have track forward and track back as long press actions.
The power button has 4 functions – power on or off is a press and hold for 3 seconds, the press and release (or 1 click) is play, pause, answer, or hang-up; two clicks is for Siri or OK Google actions, and pressing and holding for 10 seconds is for Bluetooth pairing. The ambient noise button has 2 functions with the press and release being the ambient noise function toggle and the long press cycling through the EQ settings – Signature (Amplified Vocals and Bass), Balanced (even sound without enhancements), and Bass Boost (Amplified bass and sub-bass).

The neato Botvac D6 Connected is an impressive household vacuum cleaner that is happy vacuuming hard surfaces as well as on carpet – as long as that carpet is not too shaggy.
The unit comes well outfitted with the robot, its charging base and 1 boundary marker – which is a magnetic strip designed to keep the robot out of areas of the room – such as furniture it might get stuck under or an area where there may be things to get snagged on.
The robot is controlled from the Neato App that is available on both Android and the iOS (Apple) and makes use of Wi-Fi to connect the robot and allow it to be controlled. While the D6 can store multiple floor plans – each floor must have a spot for the charging base. It is unclear to me if you could move the single base unit to new locations and use it on multiple floors – although that would decrease it usefulness to have to move the base and to robot between floors.
To use the robot, you must first have it do a special cleaning run to allow the unit to record a map. This helps the robot in learning its surroundings and where its base. This is where I had some troubles after a couple of runs. My wife then stepped and just ran the robot from the app – without running the special cleaning run and voila! We had a map and a now can run the robot whenever we desire to do so. The robot can also be set up to run a scheduled cleaning run and it will do so as requested and then return to its base once done. The robot will send you messages when it needs to have its bin emptied and when it gets stuck.
My wife and I have found the robot to be very useful and now we love it. So much so that my wife has named it Niles after the Butler on the TV show on the Nanny!

Will this fit a 2012 Volvo XC 60?
It should work and you might have to get an extension cable to route the rear-facing camera. Since your vehicle has a hatchback - routing the cable through the wiring harness and onto the glass will present challenges.

It has one tray that can use Letter or legal and holds 250 sheets. It does have a single-sheet manual feed tray also.
