This one is tough because you’re basically using old school tech. It reminds me more of adjusting for your wireless access because you have to consider line of sight and interference to get the best signal. My parents actually had an 80’s television from Service Merchandise and a digital converter and they got all the channels. I purchased a 32” Samsung LED TV for them. The furthest channel they need to get is the one they want the most and is 10.9 miles as you drive.
I originally bought the basic rabbit ear style RCA for $19.99 and all the channels came in except for one so I went back and rather than try repeatedly I simply bought the most expensive, $99 antenna with a booster and reflector. Well, the 2 channels that are the furthest away would not come in at all. So, in my case, the $19.99 antenna actually worked better than the most expensive one. Go figure.
I have walked away from this feeling that all antennas are the same and it’s all about the placement.
It’s hard to find actual advice in this area. No one at a store will know anything about it. The TV I am dealing with is older than all the people working at your average Best Buy :) The reviews are of little help simply because everyone loves, or hates, each antenna based on their location and how well they can get a signal from where their TV is. I hope my experience in this helps someone else. Start with the $19.99 antenna. If you're thinking the cheapest one is the worst, it's not.
What's great about it: Price, ease of use, nothing to plug in
