This is my favorite of all the Mortal Kombat games that have been released as of the date of this writing (last entry was MKX). Though there is a new one released already with MKX.
The game itself as is already known is basically a reboot of the timeline that ended with Mortal Kombat Armageddon and brought us back to the way it should be ie 2D fighting plane instead of 3D.
The story itself was surprisingly pretty good considering the games history and the usual lack of importance of story within fighting games and to the overall fighting game community.
The only negative I have to say is the beginning of the inclusion of movie character DLC that is a downside but there far worse things. I cannot comment on the online portion either since I never used it.

It's a decent enough fighter for what it is ie an anime fighter. If you know the properties involved in this game it helps but it's not necessarily a requirement since I myself only really know Sword Art Online/Shakugan no Shana and A Certain Magical Index/Railgun (to a much more limited degree). But I enjoyed it all the same. It's not as complex as other fighting games but that doesn't hurt it.
The only negative I really have to state is the fact that a newer version has already been released in Japan and was announced even before this was released. But I enjoyed this game enough to buy it in Japanese and than sell it to buy it again in English and I don't regret it.
Overall if you like anime fighters go for it if you don't well than don't.

It's an interesting mix of games even though most hold no real interest for me. I really only bought it for Killer Instinct Gold (though I have 2) and Battletoads Arcade (always liked beat em ups since the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade Game). I don't really have any complaints in this case since it's allowing me to try games I was curious about when I was a kid and older.
The bottom line for this game is simple for the price it's hard to go wrong even if you only like a few of the games your doing well. So if your a fan of any of them and want to play again go for it. I personally picked it up for $17 or so after tax ($20 sale price + GCU Discount) and I'm pleased overall.
