In his commentary on the DVD for Shall We Dance?, director Peter Chelsom wastes no time explaining how he knew he had to change the original Japanese story so that it would make sense for an American audience. He speaks of his admiration for the film and even points out moments where he stole direct shots from the original. The film itself is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Other supplemental materials include deleted scenes with optional commentary, a making-off featurette, a closer look at the music in the film, and a music video for the Pussycat Dolls's track "Sway." This is a fine release from Miramax.

This movie reminds us all not to stay in that same old rut. Don't take the people around us for granted. As we are reminded in the movie, we are witness to each others lives. And that is even more important in this crazy world today. I started ballroom dance lessons a year ago and I can relate to the process of learning and the fun and laughter that came from the experience.
What's great about it: Good comedy and Richard Gere was great in the movie.
