I bought this movie mostly to satisfy my recent 3D Blu-Ray addiction, since there's not that many out there to begin with and this one came highly recommended. I'd never seen it prior to my first viewing of the 3D version.
The movie itself is certainly entertaining. The characters are memorable (to this day I still quote "It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!"), especially the three girls and the minions. The 3D angle is a minor enhancement, although the film would probably be equally as enjoyable in 2D (unlike the Legend of the Guardians, whose 3D version is far superior to its 2D counterpart).
My only criticism is that while the movie was good, I think the various reviews I'd read online and heard from friends hyped it up a little higher than it needed to be.

The Fifth Element has grown on me over the years, from a movie I didn't like at first to one of my all-time favorites. The acting is terrific if you try not to take it too seriously (i.e. Tiny as the president, which I love, by the way). I can't get enough of the characters portrayed by Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman and most certainly Chris Tucker. It has some fun action sequences, a great soundtrack, and a solid dose of humor throughout.
All of that said, I know that the question you are most likely asking is "How's the quality of the Blu-Ray edition?"

The first time I watched this, I rented the Blu-Ray (2D) and was not very impressed. It was fun because it was TRON, but I felt the acting and writing wasn't that great. It was okay, and felt like what TRON was supposed to be, but I felt a little let down.
However, I decided to spring for the 3D copy when I got my new setup, and I'm very glad I did. The writing and acting seemed to really grow on me the second time around, and the difference the 3D made elevated this movie from "all right" to "very good".
I'd also like to counter all of those complaints about the 3D aspect. Everything before and after "The Grid" was shot in 2D on purpose (and they even say so before the opening credits). The entire "Grid" section is shot in 3D and is done very well. You can see the difference immediately when it shifts. Just because you don't feel like something isn't flying out of the screen constantly and hitting you in the face doesn't mean it's not shot in 3D, and not shot in 3D very well.
What's great about it: It's TRON!
What's not so great: Script could use a little depth
